ADftTISING AGE May 21, 1962 NBBB HitsPronicofyl 'Quit Srnoking' Ads NEw Yoas, May. 15--Nationai Better Business Bureau has rapped Tobacco Guidance Center here for advertis'ing claims that the eom- • pany's Pronicotyl' stops the tobacco habit. A Tobacco Guidance Center of- ficial countered. however, that the bureau's charges were "pilslead- ing." He added that the companyy expects to be able to present in one month a report' on clinical' tests by physicians to support its claims. The company's present research . data were compiled overseas i NBBB alleged in a service bul.le- tin, that the company's ads irnply that Pronicotyl cures the smoking habit. The ads, placed directly by the eompany,, are small-space in- sertions, with headings such as, -"Many physicians stop smoking." Pron7cotyl' is a tablet treatment that costs $24.85. According to NBBB, its active ingredients are ginger, licorice, coriander, clove, mentholi and natural flavorings. . "hiBBB' knows of' no competent scientific evidence which would establish that flavoring agents or any combinations thereof, will cure or permanently overcome the smoking habit," it' reported. The bureau also noted that a Pronicotyl brochure claimed that the treatment was the only one adopted by Centre de Propaganda An+.:^-Tabac,, of Paris, Geneva and Berlin. However, NBBB added, the Centre de Propaganda is a com- inercial enterprise headed by two principals of Tobacco Guidance Centpr: Robert' C. Willems, presi- dent,, and Raymond A, Janssens;, continental division director. #
