Tiny amounts of it are essential for life but the c o n s t a n t presence of, larger amounts are harmful. Report Given The e'xperimentaL demon- .aration was that of Drs. T. C. W,estfall and D. T. White of West Virginia Uni'nzersity, Morgantown, and Ei' a s re ported Sunda%' at the 461 h annuAi'meetin, of the FEder- ation of American So•_ieties fo, FxpP-'imentai Biology, The scientists have n : doubt that thz~ adrer,al-r,eed- ling substance in tobacco smoke they are dealing with is n i c o t i n e. Science has known for some time that large amounts of nicotine in- crease the secretion of epi', nephrine by those glands. But there has been a big question if the smoke of one or a number of cigarettes smoked in quick succession could give off enough nico- tine to have mueh, effect. Westfall and White re- quired' dbgs to inhale by in- Irndiicing cigarette smoke fold. When cigarette smoke w•as inhaled' at a faster rate, the content, increased 100• fold. Pollution Findings Another scientific finding on the air which people take 'into theirlurigs had to* r3A with acrolein, an irritating ~substance foun& in smog, au• tomobile exhausts and ', i n• dustrial air pollution. Dr. U. D. MUu'phy and his as• ~ociates of the U.S. Publie. Health Service, Cincinnati,. told the meeting tih a t the present parmissible level nl rcrolPin probably is too high. This permissible lievcl' is ,e-half of one part in one -nillion parts. In that trace amount it cannot be detected y smell nor does it irritate he eyes and nostrils. Never• heless, this tiny amount is enough to cause certain un, desirable physiological ef• fects, Murphy reported. Their experiments with mice and guinea pigs showpd that single two-hour -ex- posures to this permissible level and even a little helow increased resistance to air flow in and out of the animals' lungs. ADVERTISING AGE // May 21, 1962 NBBB Hits Pronicotyl 'QuitS:n "n 'Ads NEW Yoxs„ May. 15-National Better Business Bureau has rapped Tobacco Guidance Center here for advertising claims that the com- pany's Pronicotyl stops the tobacco habit. A Tobacco Guidance Center of- ficial countered! however, that the bureau's charges were "mislead- ing." He added that the company expects to be able to present in one month a report on clinical t'ests by physicians to support its claims. The company's present research data were compiled overseas. NBBB alleged in a service bulle- tin that the company's ads imply that Pronicotyl cures the smoking habit. The ads, placed directly by the company, are small-space in- sertions, with headings such as, "Many physicians stop smoking."' Pronicotyli is a tablet treatment that costs $24.85. According to NBBB, its active ingredients are ginger, licorice, coriander, clove, menthol and natural flavorings. . "NBBB knows of no competent scientific evidence which would establish that flavoring agents or any combinations thereof, will cure or permanently overcome the smoking habit," it reported. ~ The bureau also noted that a Pronicotyl brochure claime& that the treatment was the only one ~ 0 adopted by Centre de Propaganda W Anti-Tabac, of Paris, Geneva and ~ Berlin. However;, NBBB added, the ~~ Centre de Propaganda -is a com- mercial enterprise headeu by twr- princiaais of Tobacco Guidance ~ kcAb Center: Robert C. Willems„ presi- 4"A dent, and Raymond A.
