May 16, 1962 Tobacco-Cancer Tie Emphasized TORONTO, May 16 (AP).- The Canadian Medical Associa- tion said yesterday it now is accepted in medical and scien- tific circles that smoking, par-. ticularly cigarette smoking, causes lung cancer. Careful studies suggesl;, how- ever, that a prolonged period of exposure is required before malignancy develops in suscep-:: ,tible persons, It told the Royal -Commission on Health Services. Efforts should be made to discourage smoking among young people, but legislation aimed at prohibitiom was "not highly r`egarded," the report' said. The association appealed to. ahe commission to help educate. the public, and particularly to prevent young people from tak-- ing up the smoking habit. . Starting Young The New York City Board of Educa- tion has a mandate to iiiform its )wung charGzs about the evils of alcohol and opium. Now, according to Dr. Jacob H. From now on. weekly no-smoking instruction will start in the fifth grade with the 10-year-olds. Dr: Shack expliuned that, in city high schools "we know smoking is far too prevalent' for us to be comfortable about:' and "there's no question that some ele- ment:uy-school children do smoke." One first-grade (6year-olds) teacher said: "A couple of my children used to sneak smokes in the schoolyard, but it would be tuifaii- to say that all or most of them sinoke."
