Ye STAR Tuc*son, Arizona March 16, 1967 i Nicotine Filter Myth Exploded CemVii.d From Wire Servias NEW YORK - A leading can- cer research institute, reporting ~'ednesday on its analysis of tar and nicotine content of 56 brands of cigarettes: advised smokers who catmnr break the habit to switch to brands that contain low quantities of these harmful substances. The study was done by Dr. ,George E. Moore and his asso- s ciates at Roswell Park Me- i'morial Institute, New York [State's cancer research and .treattnent center in Buffalo. It j',was published in the March is- ;sue of Cancer, the Journal of E the American Cancer Society. The study showed that "some filters on cigarettes are helpful but' others are not adequately protecting people," Moore said in a statement Wednesday. "Our study and information from the tobacco industry itself Indicates that more effective fil- ters can be developd," he I stated. "We believe that improved fil- ters would help stop needless ~ and premature loss of life each ! year from lung cancer, certain ~ other kinds of cancer, emph- ysema, ysema, cardiovascular disease,, and other diseases associated with heavy smoking," he said. In the analysis of the 56 brands, Marvel and Cascade, both king size filter tip ciga- rettes ranked lowest in~ tar and DI S PATCH St. Paul, Minn. March 15, 1967' reduce tar and nicotine, but the tobacco industry should nicotine content, The 56 brands represented nearly all those marketed in the United States at the time of the study. The highest tar and nicotine conent was found in unfiltered king size Raleigtts. One of the study's most dis- turbing findings, according to the scientists, was that one fil- tered cigarette - king size Pall Mall - yielded more tar and nicotine than the unfiltered1ing size cigarette of the same brand: In tests of Chesterfield, Lucky Strike, and Camels, the scien- tists found that the smoker gets as much or more tar and nico- tine from the filter cigarette as from the unfiltered, regular cigarette of the same brand: The tobacco Institute, which represents tobacco manufac- tiu•ers. said in a statement Wednesday: "We know of no valid scien- t i fi i c evidence demo:_z:-ating that either tar or nicotine is re- sponsible for any human illness- es. We believe this emphasis on tar and nicotine can mislead and'confuse the public." In the Roswell Park study, four cigarettes from each brand were "smoked" by a machine that automatically puffed once a minute with the same amount of pressure until each cigarette had reached the average length at which smokers discard their cigarettes. Scientist Asks Better Ft Iters Improved cigaret filterss would help stop needless and premature loss of life each year from lung cancer and other diseases some physicians associate with smoking, a cancer-research scientist says. ' Most filter-type cigarets Moore, who maintains there is a link between lung cancer and cigaret smoking, said some people think a filter-tip cigaret gives more protection than a non-filter cigaret. While this Is true in some Instances, Moore said'thers are some brands In which devise more effective fil- 1 as much or more tar and ters, Dr. George E.
