New York State Researchers Say Filters Reduce Risk of Lung Cancer by 40 per Cent Two doctors at New York State's major medical research center have reported conducting a study on hu- mans which they say proves that smoking filter cigarettes rather than plain-endl3 reduces the users' risk of developing lung cancer. "The risk for filter smokers is about 601per cent of the corresponding risk for the regular smoker," Dr. Irwin Bross and Robert Gibson of the Ros- well Park Memorial Institute in Buf- '. falo said. This would be a 40 per cent reduction ini the risk said to be run by plain-end smokers. Dr. Bross maintained further that the filter smoker stilU runs about four times the risk of developing lung cancer as the non-smoker. Reported In Health Journal Dr. Bross is Roswell Park's direc- tor of' biostatistics. Mr. Gibson, a so- ciologi'st, is on the institute's staff. Their conclusions are reported in thee current issue of the "Journal of Pub- lic Health," the official journal of the American Public Health Asociationa The conclusions were reportedly based on a eomputerized' comparison of the smoking habits of lung cancer victims treated at Roswell Park with the tobacco preferences of an equal number of non-~cancer patients who were admitted to the institute for other ailments. Ea& member of one group was matched with one from the other ac- cording to age and date of admi'ssion: Excluded from the study were non- smokers, pipe and cigar smokers, per- sons who had once smoked cigarettes but had stopped and persons who smoke either mentholated cigarettes ageciflcallf, !t declaree that I the average young amoker in the 25 to 35 bracket faces a rbortaqing of his 11fe by about eight y.are if he smokes more than two packi a day. Even the ' light smoker can expect a re- duct[on of his life expectancy It finds. Smoking is becoming a a more costly habit in another way, too. Because of tax boosts in many parts of the country, trie price of a pack of ciga- reta hpa been mounting. In iioyd County, last year, a eatimated =Z,DB9,o00 was spent I by local residents for cigarete. ~ It was at tba rate of 0 per ~~~mokes._ _ or a mixture of various types of cig- arettes, filtered and unfiltered. Thus one group contained persons who smoked unfiltered, unmentholated regular 70mm cigarettes and the other those who smoked filtere& unmentho- lated cigarettes, either regular length or king size. According to the report, 65 of the cancer cases smoked filter cigarettes, compared with 200 who smoked plain• ends. In the non-cancer group,.76 members smoked filter cigarettes and 138 smoked plain-ends. - The researchers explained the un. usuaii preference of both groups for regular cigarettes by disclosing that statistics for the comparison were collected between 19601and 1966„ when filter cigarettes did not hold their present dominant share of the market According t'o the statistics, a per- son smoking regular cigarettes ap- peared to have 6.48'times the chance of d'eveloping liing cancer as the non- smoker while a person smoking filters ran 3.83' times the risk of the non- smoker. The statistics also indicated that the number of years a person smokes and the number of cigarettes he smokes in a day also influences his risk of de- veloping lung cancer, the researchers saidL They asserted that their study, provides "fairly clear-cut and con- vincing evidence that switching to fil- ter cigarettes has reduced the risk of lung cancer in these smokers." Dr. Bross and Mr. Gibsom said that "filters have reduced the risk but much greater reduction is need'e and that "existing filter technolo would enable further steps in this rection to be taken immediately." ,I y
