C. If. Keith of the Cclanese Fibers- Company has been selected to receive the Philip Morris Award for Distinguished Achievment in Tobaccoi Scince, it was •an- nounced today by Dr. Helmut R'.R. 1S'akcliam, Vice President- Corporatc Rescarchi and Devel- opmcnt for Phllip "h4orri8 In- corporated. The award, v^hich was inaug- urated last year, consists of a specially designed medaldion in addition to $1000. Dr. Keith„ -a Group Leader, Cigarette Filter Research for Celanese, was chosen by an Award Committee apoint'ed by the Editorial Board of Tobacco Science 'Magazine. In selecting the secipicnt, the committee recognized! his many cont'ribu- tions in the field of tobacco smoke characferieation and fil- tration. According to Dr. Wakeham. "Dr. Keith,, while assuming a position of lpadership within his company and the scientific community, has further enhanc- ed the prestige and respect ac- corded tobacco scientists. "In: addition, Dr. Keith' has demonstrated outstanding qual- ities of character land service to the general community which have reflected credit uuon the tobacco industry." The winner of the Philip Mor- ris awar& is chosen on the basis of outst'anding scientific ,achievement and development of fundamental knowledge In one or more of three areas: grow^th, harvesting and curing tohaccoc properties and quali'- tics of tobacco and tob•acco pro+ Iducts; and new vnetttods for the evaluation of tabacco and tobacco product properties. A recipient of an A. B. de- ,gree in chemistry from; Wil- liams College and a Ph. D. in physics and chemistry from Brown `1lniversity, Dr. Keit#- has written publications in the field of tobacco smoke charac- terizatiom -and filtration and has presented numerous papers on the subject at scientific meet- ings. These include eleven pap- ers delivered to the Tobacco Chemists Conference. He Is also co-author of, the chapter end.if led "The Selective Filtration of Tobacco Smoke" ina a recent book, "Tobacco and: Tobacco Smoke," edited by Dr. E. L. Wynder. Dr. Keith has served as Chairman of Session at the Tobacco C•hemists' Conference in 1964 and 1965, and as Special Raporteur at the International Scientific Congress Ih Athens,. 'Grcece. in 1966. d Clark Gum Names Kraft-4 Assistant Brand Manager : M. A. Kraft Jr. has been appointed assistant brand manager-gum for Clark Gum Co., a division of Philip Morris Domestic. Mr. Kraft joined Philip Morris in ' _ June 1963 as an associate psychologist. ` In 1964 he was promoted to research psychologist and in 1967 to senior mar- keting research analyst. Mr. Kraft was graduated with a bachelor's degree in psychology from St. Lawrence University and later re- ceived his masters in psychology from Connecticut College. M. Jack Oates New quality control manager of Philip Morris Inc. in Louisville is M. Jack Oates, who joined the company as a chemist, in 1948. For the past 11 years Mr. Oates has been assistant quality con- trol manager. AO W
