Devoted' to Fundamental Research in the Natural Sciences
Number 13
VISR President Honored with University's Thomas Jefferson Award
Dr. Allan Talbott
Gwathmey, president of
VISR and professor of
chemistry at the Univer-
sity of Virginia, was pre-
sented the 1963 Thomas
Jefferson Award given an-
nually to an outstanding
member of the University
community.
The award, presented
during Founder's Day
Ceremonies in Charlottes-
ville, Virginia, cited Dr.
Gwathmey's "leadership
in bringing about ... the
establishment in Virginia
of a research organization
(VISR) devoted to fun-
damental research in the
natural sciences. He has
always been the guiding
spirit behind its growing Dr. Allan T. Gwathmay
operations", the citation (Phto roartmy CHEMICAL AND ENGINEERING NEWS)
continued. ' ~
Dr. Gwathmey, affectionately known as Pete, was
chairman of the Research Committee of the Virginia
Academy of Science which originally conceived the
idea of VISR. He has been president of the Board
of Trustees since VISR was chartered in 1948. His
persistent efforts and deep faith in the value of basic
research have culminated in the Institute's new lab-
oratory and permanent home.
Born in Richmond in 1903, Dr. Gwathmey at-
tended preparatory school in this city and received his
B.S. degree from Virginia Military Institute in 1923.
To hundreds of VMI men Pete is first and foremost'
a "Brother Rat" and possesses a real genius for ex-
pressing his high regard for his alma mater. Massa-
chusetts Institute of Technology awarded him a B.S:
degree in Electrochemical Engineering in 1928. For
the next few years he worked as engineer and re-
search chemist for several large industrial firms. He
returned to Virginia and won his Ph.D. degree in
Physical Chemistry from the University of Virginia
in 1938. He has been a_ staff member _of - the Uni-
versity's Chemistry D~e-
partment ever since, being
appointed successively re-
search associate, assistant
professor, associate pro-
fessor, and full professor
in 1956. -
The surface properties
of metal single crystals
have been Professor
Gwathmey's life-long re-
search interest. His work
in this field pre-dated the
great interest in single
crystals brought on by the
discovery of the transistor
and other solid-state de-
vices. More -than 50 publi-
cations on metal single
crystals have originated
from his laboratory since
1940. His research ac-
complishments have been
honored by: the Research
Award of the Virginia
Academy of Science in 1941, the Sullivan Prize of
the University of Virginia in 1948, the Oak Ridge
Institute for Nuclear Studies Research Award in
1948, the Southern Chemist Award in 1952, the Dis-
tinguished Service Award of the Virginia Section,
American Chemical Society in 1962, and tfie President
and Boardd of Visitors Research Award of the Uni-
versity in 1963. He has been an invited lecturer before
numerous national and international science groups.
More than these actual research accomplishments,
Pete Gwathmey values the dose associations which
he has developed with his students. The Jefferson
Award citation pointed out: "No teacher could wish
for greater satisfaction than Professor Gwathmey has
in the simple fact that a large proportion of his
students have established highly regarded records
through distinguished work in the field of surface
chemistry research. These students readily recognize
their obligation to their teacher from whom they
learned the toughening discipline of a complex ex,
perirnent."

Thirteen corporation executives, four university
professors, two engineers and consultants, and an
attorney make up the current 20-member VISR Board

University of Virginia, is president (See page 1)~. Mr.
H. Rupert Hanmer, -vice president and director of
research of the American Tobacco Company, is vice
