STANDARD OF INDIANA'S John Swearin-
gen, one of the oil industry's most outspoken
public defenders, devoted a good part of his talk
to the Chicago company's efforts to "broaden oui
base."
'Although we believe that the oil and gas

existing lines of business:"
To date, the farthest afield Standard of
Indiana has ventured was its acquisition last year
of a 15 percent interest in Cetus Corp, an exotic
little Berkeley research lab specializing iri bugs. -
Cetus' main claim to fame is its process for
speeding the growth of antibiotic bugs. And it
is hard at work on developing an organisrl7
that would.reproduce many of the chemicals

in petroleum. . __ _
The ultimate payoff. would be an oitt-
refining bug: Feed it crude oil and - don't..
