the pivotal leadership role of president has been passed
71- ~to Paul A. Marks, M.D:, presentlydirector of the Columbia
;~ ' -- University Comprehensive Cancer Center.
Dr. Marks will become the fourth president of MSKCC,
assuming his new responsibilities in late July.

The appointment was made public after Dr. Marks's~,
selection was approved by the MSKCC Board of Trustees. ._
~ ~ Laurance S. Rockefeller, chairman of the Board, made'
the announcement on June 20th.

Mr. Rockefeller explained that Dr. Marks's appointment will also be accompanied by a significant
reorganization of the Center's management structure. Effective immediately, the office of the
"' president will also include the responsibilities and title of "chief executive officer" of the
inst!itution
as a whole. This will incude direct authority over the Center, Memorial Hospital, and the
" Sloan-Kettering Institute ;.~
V~~ Dr. Marks, a hematologist and authority on human genetics, has been vice president for Healtl~
~Sciences and director-:.of the Comprehensive Cancer Center/Institute of Cancer Research at
;YColumbia University since 1973. An advisor to the National Science Foundation, the National;,
~lnstitutes of Health, and other government bodies over the years. Dr. Marks has served as a
member'of the President's Cancer Panel (1976-1979), the President's Biomedical Research
Panel (1975-1976), and most recently, as a mernber of the President s Commission on the
Aaccident at Three Mile Island. _
Dr. Marks, 53, comes to the Center after a long and distinguished affiliation with Columbia
University. A 1949 graduate of Columbia's College of Physicians and Surgeons, Dr. Marks was
appointed to the faculty of the College in 1955 and has been associated there in mcreasingly,
