Mr. Rockefeller explained that Dr. Marks's appointment will also be accompanied by a significant reorganization of the Center's management structure. Effective immediately, the office of the "' president will also include the responsibilities and title of "chief executive officer" of the inst!itution as a whole. This will incude direct authority over the Center, Memorial Hospital, and the " Sloan-Kettering Institute ;.~ V~~ Dr. Marks, a hematologist and authority on human genetics, has been vice president for Healtl~ ~Sciences and director-:.of the Comprehensive Cancer Center/Institute of Cancer Research at ;YColumbia University since 1973. An advisor to the National Science Foundation, the National;, ~lnstitutes of Health, and other government bodies over the years. Dr. Marks has served as a member'of the President's Cancer Panel (1976-1979), the President's Biomedical Research Panel (1975-1976), and most recently, as a mernber of the President s Commission on the Aaccident at Three Mile Island. _ Dr. Marks, 53, comes to the Center after a long and distinguished affiliation with Columbia University. A 1949 graduate of Columbia's College of Physicians and Surgeons, Dr. Marks was appointed to the faculty of the College in 1955 and has been associated there in mcreasingly, ~ responsible positions ever since ~.4 a A1. ~~~~~~ ~~ ~years later, professor and chairman of the Department of 1~~~`" s, •~' ~",Human Genetics and Development. In 1970 he was ~J • ~ appointed dean of the Faculty of Medicine and vice.t~,. ~ ~z president of Medical Affairs at the 213-year-old College ~,of Physicians and Surgeons, the second oldest medical`~ °~, ~ i,. ~ : school in the nation. He held that' position until 1973 ;- P`when he was named to his current post, vice president in' ~ ~charge of Medical Affairs ~- Dr. Marks has served as editor-in-chief of two malor," medical journals, the Journal of Clinical Investigairon, =~, s ~"from 1967 to 1972, and Blood, the Journal of the American .~ gy, a post he assumed in.1978 and ~"Society of Hematolo ~ still holds.
