"SMOKING BILL IN LEGISLATION
NEWSCASTER: A state senate committee heard testimony today,
on a bill aimed at limiting smoking in public places. But WXYZ's
Robert Lambert says, even the medical experts are not in agreement
the measure would protect the health of non-smokers as is its intent.
ROBERT LAMBERT: The measure would require establishment
of smoke free areas in retail stores, schools, auditoriums, arenas
and meeting rooms, so it wouldn't require owners to buy new ventilating
equiDment to comply. University of Michigan physician Dr. Rex Archer(?),
testified that second hand smoke can bring on angina, and that Japanese
study of women who's husbands smoke showed their incidence of lung
cancer twice that of the rest of the population. But Dr. George
Schaffer, a consultant to the TOBACCO INSTITUTE, says there's
insufficient evidence to warrant laws prohibiting smoking and he
qhoted a Surgeon General's report from 1979, indicating the impact
of second hand smoke on a person's health may be more psychological
than physical. He urged lawmakers to reject the legislation. Robert
Lambert, WXYZ News, Wayne State University.
