Prevention Magazine Article: "Ventilation and Odor Control:
Prospects for Energy Efficiency"
The attached report was referenced in an article that appeared
in the December. 1980 edition of Prevention Magazine. This
report, written in somewhat technical language, explores the
relationship of ventilation, odor control and energy efficien-
cy.
In'the opinion of the authors of the report, William S. Cain,
PhD. in particular, the higher ventilation rate required to
exhaust indoor odor, and contaminant reduction, requires
significantly increased energy use, particularly when smoking
is a factor. Further, that additional research (federal grants)
in ventilation science be undertaken to achieve "healthful in-
door environments and energy efficiency".
Several references are made to tobacco smoke as one of the
contaminants and "odor nuisances".
While certain aspects of this report are based on theory and
conjecture, this report and future efforts in this area may
be used to fuel arguments of those who advocate restrictive
smoking legislation (no smoking saves energy?).
Please return the report to me if you feel it should be cir-
culated. Shall I order additional copies? "
