As.I said in an earlier not~~ Gary Huber was fired as director
of Kentucky's Tobacco and Health Research-Institute. Attached,
please find some clips.
The complicated story, sorted out, is:
.. -- Huber was fired because of "unsatisfactory administrative
performance." He can, and appg~ently will, appeal.
=- Huber's reputation as a scientist emerges untarnished.
A scientific review panel says that charges that.he manipulated
research findings are "inappropriate and perhaps even malicious."
-- Huber remains at UK as a tenured professor at its College
of Medicine.
-- The local Commonwealth's Attorney says there are no grounds
for prosecuting Huber. Huber is, however, apparently negotiating
with the university to pay back certain funds the university believes
due it. These funds involve travel expenses.
-- The'university.'s president released a report on the ll-year-
old institute, calling its work "undistinguished." Ironically, says
a Louisville newspaper, the report urges the institute proceed along
a plan of action outlined by Huber. Previous to Huber, work at the
institute was "pedestrian,-uninspired, and marginal," the scientific
review 5oard said. It found administration at the institute prior
~o Huber chaotic.
