Dear Mr. Young:
While you are not, I sffppose, fully responsible for
views that are expressed in the magazine over the
signature of persons who are not members of the staff,
it is nevertheless distressing to see incorrect infor-
mation (and perhaps further "citations of it) put forth
in that context.
I am referring to an article by Dr. Robert L. DuPont
which was published September 7. In commenting on
the nuclear power controversy -- and I was not aware
that he was an expert in th.at field -- he observed
twice that cigarette smoking is responsible for the
deaths of at least 3.50,000 persons per year in the
U.S.
He cannot document the statement. We know because we
have tried.. We have tried because it has been stated
by so many "authorities" that it has become a familiar
myth. We have traced the number to the early 1960s --
and it has remained strikingly unchanged for almost a
generation -- when an obscure professor projected
certain .assumptions of smqking as a cause of various
illnesses against th6 then existing ~ortali~y patterns
among Americans.
We:believe that the smoking and health controversy, on
its merits, is of sufficient concern to all of us so
that it need not be confused in such false assertions.
Cor~.ially,
William Kloepfer, J~.
