Abstract
Last week you mentioned the excise on cigarettes ms having been 5# per pack for many years. Actually, the tax has been 8% -- at the federal level; the states and municipalities, over those years have added their own substantial excises which average over an additional 13¢. Thus, in the last fiscal year the federal government took in over $2.6 billion and the states more than $3.8 billion.

Dear Mr. Rather:
Last week you mentioned the excise on cigarettes ms
having been 5# per pack for many years. Actually,
the tax has been 8% -- at the federal level; the
states and municipalities, over those years have
added their own substantial excises which average
over an additional 13¢. Thus, in the last fiscal
year the federal government took in over $2.6
billion and the states more than $3.8 billion.
I thought you might want to drop this into the research
file because the subject will no doubt come up again.
