Last week you mentioned the excise on cigarettes ms having been 5# per pack for many years. Actually, the tax has been 8% -- at the federal level; the states and municipalities, over those years have added their own substantial excises which average over an additional 13¢. Thus, in the last fiscal year the federal government took in over $2.6 billion and the states more than $3.8 billion.

The Brazilian Association of the Tobacco Industry (ABIFUMO) considered extremely opportune to hold the "II National Convention of the Tobacco Industry" with a prime view to properly promote the tobacco sector. It is perhaps worth mentioning that the previous convention was held I0 years ago.

For many years in the past, the cigarette association has been split in the Clove Cigarette Association and the White Cigarette Association. Early this year both associations have agreed in principle to set up the Tobacco Industry Advisory Committee but until today the NrMA only exists in name.

NEWSCASTER: A state senate committee heard testimony today, on a bill aimed at limiting smoking in public places. But WXYZ's Robert Lambert says, even the medical experts are not in agreement the measure would protect the health of non-smokers as is its intent.

Bill 1174 from the State Government Committee a~d on the floor of the House for a vote. The legislation, which Dawida introduced early this ye~ar, prohibits smoking in public places and at public meethigs except in designated smoking areas. Thebill has been bottled up in committee since April 8, 1981.

It will be another week before proponents of an= ordinance to ban smoking in public places in Charlotte ' County can do their shopping in smoke free atmospheres. County commissioners, while today "conceptually" :I approving the ordinance, ordered it redratted, The, ordinance will be considered next Tuesday at a 10 a.m:. i public hearing at Murdock.
