Abstract

Former United States Ambassador to the United Nations, President of the
Peace Research Institute# Chairman of the Citizens Committee for a Nuclear Test
Ban Treaty, James J. Wadsworth has devoted much of his life to governmental
service, international affairs~ and the crucial problem of world peace. He
received the Eleanor Roosevelt Peace A~.zard in 19~S~ and the Contribution to
Peace ~ard of the United ~orld Federalists in 1964.
His book, "THE PRICE OF PEACE," has been hailed by critics as "a penetrating
and hard-hitting testament of the most urgent and complex problem facing the
world today - disarmament." He shares wlth twelve of the ~orld's most dlstln-
gulshed statesmen, philosophers and historians, authorship of "A WAR~-SS WORLD,"
a notable ~.zork on the problems and opportunities of a disarmed world under law..
His present schedule of activities includes extensive speaking engagements
on the United Nations, world peace and international relations. A regular ,
contributor to national magazines, his articles appear in such publications as
"THIS ~2EK" and "SATURDAY REVIEW." He is President of The International Club
of Washington, Do C., and board member, trustee or sponsor for several national
organizations ~.zorklmg for improvement of international relations.
Ambassador ~.~adsworth served as United States Representative to the United
Nations from September 1960 until January 1961 and for the seven years preceding
he served as Deputy Representative. From 1958 to 1961 he was also the United
States 2epresentative on Disarmament, and served as head of the United States
Delegation to the Nuclear Test Ban Talks in Geneva.
During 1956 and 1957 Ambassador Wadsworth was Chief of the United States
Delegation in the negotiations which established the International Atomic
Energy Agency.
Prior to his appointment as Deputy United States Representative to the
United Nations, Mr. Wadsworth served in a number of executive posts in the
federal government. He was Director of the Civil Defense Office of the
National Security Resources Board~ Deputy and later acting Administrator of the
Federal Civil Defense Adminlstration~ Special Assistant to the Administrator
of the Economic Cooperation Administration, a~.d Director of the Public Interest
Division of the ~ar Assets Administration. He also directed Governmental
Affairs for the Air Transport Association.
Denied service in the Armed Forces during World War II because of a leg
injury, Ambassador Wadsworth became a defense plant executive as Assistant
Industrial Relations Manager of the Aircraft Division of the CurtlssqTright
Corporation.
Du.rlng the ten y~ars prior to I~orld War II he served as a member of the
New York State Legislatmre.
Born in Groveland, Ne~ York, on June 12, 1905, the Ambassador attended
St. Mark's preparatory school and Yale University, graduating in June 192~.
He is married to the former HartyGrlggs Tilton. They have one daughter~
Mrs. Tro;zbridge Strong, and five grandchildren.
