MEDIA RELATIONS ACTIVITY REPORT
FIRST QUARTER 1982
Number of personal contacts made (visit to office,
meal, informal conversation, ect.) with reporters
from the following organizations: Associated Press (4),
United Press International (3), New York Times (I),
Washington Post (2), Los Angeles Times (2), U.S. News
& World Report (2), Raleigh News & Observer (5),
Louisville Courier-Journal (5), Winston-Salem Journal/
Richmond News-Leader (4), Charlotte Observer (i) ,
Kentucky Post (I), and Columbus (OH) Dispatch (2).
Handled approximately two dozen media phone inquiries.
Topics covered included: TI and government reports
on smoking and cancer; Polonium-210; Label hearings;
Carbon monoxide levels in smokers; Discrimination of
smokers in the workplace.
Coordinated with TI staff and Gray & Company media
distribution of "Cigarette Smoking and Cancer: A
Scientific Perspective." Placed AP story on TI
information.
Monitored media activity at 4 Congressional hearings.
Completed initial inventory of TI PR staff Washington
media contacts.
Developed and initiated start-up of new print placement
program for TI speakers group.
Revised "Leaf" script to reflect current economic
information. Coordinated new sound track recording
and film processing.
Published letter in the Wall Street Journal on the
Oslo Heart Study. Other published letters appearing
in Virginia, New Jersey and Utah newspapers.
Composed draft Congressional testimony for Rep. William
Wampler of Virginia.
Composed 8 news releases on scientific testimony sub-
mitted at Waxman and Hatch hearings.
Oomposed draft op-ed piece for possible submission by
Eleanor MacDonald, M.D. Anderson Hospital and Tumor
Institute.

Developed article for publication in the Tobacco
Associates 1982 yearbook.
Provided audio-visual support for Sam Chilcote
Executive Committee/TTC speech and for Kornegay
session with member company executive.
Coordinated radio actuality feeds based on Congressional
testimony of Drs. Furst and Sterling.
In addition to Institute news releases relating to
Congressional label hearings and 1982 S.G. Report,
issued TI releases on the following subjects:
TTO article on tar and nicotine yields, West Virginia's
Tobacco Heritage booklet, State Activities re-alignment,
TI-TTC amalgamation, and release of TI film "Common Sense."
