With some exceptions, supervisors voted, 26-14, to ban smoking in the City-County Building, the county Exposition Center, other county offices, county vehicles used by more than one person and many areas of the Dane County Regional Airport. Beginning June 1, smoking will be permitted in the jail but not at the Ferris Huber Center. In • areas the county shares with city of Madison. the ban is subject to city council approval. Bisgard's amendment was voted down along with other amendments to ban smoking in the jail and to allow smoking in the Huber Center. Belore the board discussion, supervisors heard from citizens about the issue. Dr. Patrick Remington, of Madison, represent- ing the American Cancer Society, said the ban "will help smokers kick their habit and wilt help to clear the air." But smoking advacate Carol Thompson, of Madison, said smokers are treated unfairly. "The anti-smokers have turned 50 million peo- ple into a group of second-class citizens," she said. "People should be appalled by the venomot~ slura against smokers."
