Building for the Future, While Cherishing the Past
During the course of its 330 years of existence, the
Town of Huntington has witnessed much of American
history. It was founded in 1653 when a group of
English immigrants purchased the land from the
Matinecock Indians. At the turn of this century, the
population was a mere 5,000. By 1950, that figure
stood at 50,000.
In the following 30 years, Huntington's population
soared to more than 200,000. Shopping centers,
houses, office buildings, and immense industrial plants
were erected on what then seemed to be endless acres
of potato fields and orchards. Today, more than 89
percent of Huntington's land has been developed.
While spectacular growth has not always meant
progress, in Huntington, fortunately, it has. Thanks to
the foresight of the Town fathers who set down zoning
regulations in 1931 and the Comprehensive Master
Plan, adopted by the Town Planning Board in 1965,
the inevitable growth and development have been
orderly and on a human scale. More than 2,000 acres
of land have been reserved for public parks and
playgrounds. Sixty-three public parks and nine
beaches are in operation, with more parks on the
drawing boards. Industrial parks are unpretentious
and do not compromise the established farms and
orchards that continue to flourish.
The future is being planned carefully. The long-
outmoded Town Hall was replaced by a $3-million
renovated school building in 1979, and 16 formerly
scattered Town agencies have been unified into one
modern structure.
Perhaps it is a sense of history and tradition that
makes Huntington so appealing to so many newcom-
ers. Wherever you travel throughout the Town, you'll
see a kaleidoscope of architectural styles reflecting
over 300 years of history. If you want to put down
roots, you'll be joining thousands who have done just
that over the past three centuries.

Quality of life in Huntington is reason enough to
settle here. All of the amenities of tranquil, gracious
suburban living are available, and yet the Big Apple,
HUNTING TON/Ne w York

New York City, lies only 40 miles away to the west.
You're never more than a few miles from the waters of
Long Island Sound. Inlets, harbors, and coves dot the
shoreline along the northern stretches of the Town. A
mere one-half hour away to the south lie the vast
sandy stretches of Long Island's Atlantic coastline,
where state and national parks are available for
recreation. There's no need to travel great distances to
enjoy the pleasures of summer surfing, swimming, and
boating. It's all right there within the confines of the
community.
Despite the preponderance of local industry,
commuters who travel the 40 miles to New York
City on the Long Island Rail Road have not been
overlooked. The trains are electrified as far east as
Huntington Station. Many new diesel buses have been
put into operation by HART (Huntington Area Rapid
Transit). Other types of HART circuits provide fixed-
route service to community and business centers and
to senior citizens; special Saturday lines link the fixed
routes and terminate at regional and community
shopping centers.

Cultural life is very important to the people of
Huntington. The Huntington Arts Council, established
in the early 1960s, includes over 80 independent
member organizations from the worlds of theater,
music, dance, the visual arts, astronomy, and history.
There is no shortage of intellectual or artistic
stimulation in Huntington.
Health care in the Town is excellent. The Hun-
tington Hospital, currently building a $19-million
addition to the premises, offers much advanced
medical treatment in its up-to-the-minute facility.
As for shopping, there are literally hundreds of
establishments available, ranging from elegant
boutiques and quaint shops to department store
chains and discount houses. Restaurants, too, offer
diversity--everything from fast food to the finest in
classic European and Oriental cuisine.
The public-school system is among the finest in
New York State, and parochial schools also are well
represented. Advanced education is readily available at
the more than 13 educational institutions that are
within easy commuting distance of the community.
In 1658, the Puritans organized Huntington's first
church, and seven years later, the Town's first church
building was erected. In those days Sunday services
were an all-day affair, and despite the fact that
churches were unheated in winter, few protested to the
fire-and-brimstone preachers.
The Episcopalians erected their first church in
1747; the Congregational Presbyterians, in 1665. The
Methodists built in 1783, Universalists in 1836, and
Roman Catholics in 1840. The first African Methodist
Episcopal church dates from 1847, and the first
synagogue was erected in 1907. Today, 64 houses of
worship serve more than a score of denominations.
Huntington is also well served by the communica-
tions industry. It has two radio stations, one AM and
Cold Spring Harbor's Whaling Museum is a popular spot [or
students and tourists
one FM, which emphasize family programming. Two
Townwide newspapers and one area newspaper are
available. Huntington TV Cable and Cablevision offer
original and syndicated programming. Community
information is a daily feature of these stations.
Under the laws of New York State, Huntington is
classified as a Suburban Town and is governed by a
Town Board composed of the Town Supervisor and
four Council members who are elected at large; the
Supervisor for a two-year term and the Council
members for a four-year term.
Additional elected officials are the Receiver of
Taxes, Superintendent of Highways, and the Town
Clerk.
Within the Town are four incorporated villages:
Asharoken, Hungtington Bay, Lloyd Harbor, and
Northport. These villages retain certain governmental
powers that are independent of the Town Board.

A Proud and Colorful History
On April 2, 1653, a group of English immigrants
bought the "First Purchase" of land, now "known as
Huntington, from the Matinecock Indians. After
several other purchases, Huntington, as we know it
today, was secured for the colonists. We believe that
the Town was named for Huntingdon, England, the
birthplace of Oliver Cromwell.
A combination of history and tradition contributed
in attracting a number of newcomers to Huntington.
Man), years ago, the Township was a center of the
sea trade. Shipbuilding, fishing and whaling, along
with domestic industries such as farming, pottery
manufacture, and brickmaking flourished.
Today, as you travel through the Town, you'll see
hundreds of residences and shops architecturally
reflecting this history. The seventeenth, eighteenth,
and nineteenth centuries are all well represented.
Among the vestiges of the colonial past are the
Arsenal on the Village Green, where arms were stored
before the Revolution, and the Old Burial Ground
nearby, which contains the remains of 35 veterans of
the War of Independence.

The "Meeting House," erected in 1665 and rebuilt in
1714, is now called the Old First Church and is the
pride of Huntington. Located on East Main Street, the
present structure (1784) supersedes an earlier building
torn down by the British who occupied Long Island
during the conflict. When the British invaded, they
drove the pastor of the church from his house, de-
stroyed his books, used the pews for firewood, and
turned the church itself into a stable. Finally, they tore
it down and used the lumber to build Fort Golgotha in
what is now the Old Burial Ground.
Cold Spring Harbor, with its impressive Whaling
Museum, has been listed on the National Register
of Historic Places. A veritable outdoor museum of
eighteenth- and early nineteenth-century American
architecture, this charming old whaling Town evokes
ghosts from its colorful past.

spy, who landed in Huntington, later xvas captured by
the British and taken to New York City, where he was

stands today in Town Hall.
On the corner of New York Avenue and High Street,
the David Conklin House, a beautiful eighteenth-
century structure, contains much local memorabilia,
furnishings, paintings, and manuscripts from the
community's rich past. A historical research library is
also at the new headquarters of the Historical Society
209 Main Street. Powell/Jarvis is an eighteenth-
century barn that houses farm implements and
agricultural paraphernalia of that era.
Other historical societies, in Greenlawn/Centerport,
Lloyd Harbor, and Northport, contain an impressive
collection of local historical artifacts. Lectures and a
schedule of activities are offered at the societies'
museums.
Walt Whitman, the "Bard of Huntington" and
founder of The Long Islander, a newspaper that is still
published today, was born in West Hills, Huntington,
on May 13, 1819. The Town's most famous citizen is
said to have been born in a farmhouse on Walt
Whitman Road. Today this house is open to the public
as a museum and contains among other memorabilia a
rare edition of Leaves o[ Grass, his immortal volume of
poetry.
Other famous residents have included Henry
L. Stimson, cabinet member for three American
Presidents; John Foster Dulles, former Secretary of
State; Allen Dulles, former director of the CIA; the late
distinguished actor Henry Fonda; folk singer Harry
Chapin; and cartoonist Rube Goldberg.
In 1872, the New York State Legislature divided the
Town of Huntington from east to west. The southern
portion, reaching to the Atlantic Ocean, was incorpo-
rated as the Town of Babylon.
Huntington maintained its rural ambience until the
beginning of the present century when its population
was less than 5,000. New residents settled after World
War I, but the population grew in leaps and bounds
after World War II.

At Home in Huntington
Testifying to the unique and varied life-styles of its
residents, Huntington offers homes ranging from
quaint, pre-Revolutionary Colonial farmhouses,
substantial Federal-style townhouses, and opulent
Tudor and Georgian mansions to ranches, split-levels,
and innovative contemporaries. What you won't find
here are vast, cloned developments.
Whether you opt for an historical village home in
Northport or Cold Spring Harbor, a vast waterfront
estate majestically looking to the Connecticut shore, or
a rambling, rustic ranch in Dix Hills, you'll find a
residence suited to your manner of living and your
budget.
Years ago, the Town fathers set down the streets
in meandering patterns rather than in a grid system,
preventing monotony in the residential areas. Inter-
spersed among the groupings of fine homes are farms,
golf courses, and public parks. Local factories and
shopping districts are so well screened by trees that
homeowners are barely aware of them.
Nestled among the bluffs overlooking Long Island
Sound are the communities of Cold Spring Harbor,
Lloyd Harbor, Halesite, Huntington Bay, Centerport,
Northport, Asharoken, Eaton's Neck, and Fort
Salonga. All offer waterfront homes, and many others
also have pleasant views of harbors below. Cold Spring
Harbor is unique in the area, as it recently was
designated a National Register Historic District,
assuring that the community will remain true to its
architectural and historical heritage.
A sizable selection of condominiums and senior-
citizen housing is also available.

Huntington: Hospitable to Industry
Historically, Huntington has always been a Town of
thriving industry. From its very beginning, whalers,
fishermen, farmers, and craftsmen have flourished
here. To this day some of these remain, but the modern
light industries of electronics, research and develop-
ment, high technology, product testing, printing,
precision instruments, aircraft products, and light
manufacturing have accounted for most of the Town's
economic growth during the past few decades. Well
over 100 manufacturing companies are located here,
employing around 16,000 persons.
Attractive, landscaped industrial parks and subtle
contemporary architecture in designated areas have
enabled local industry to remain unobtrusive and
understated. Near the intersection of the Long Island
Expressway and Route 110 in Melville, many of
Huntington's industries and an ever-growing number
of dazzling office buildings are clustered.
Firms have located here in settings reminiscent of
college campuses. They are meticulously landscaped
and maintained.
The Estee Lauder complex, renowned for its beauty
and cosmetic products, is just to the south of the Long
Island Expressway, in a building that has received
praise and prizes for its distinguished architectural
design. AIL and Underwriters Laboratories are
located on tastefully landscaped parcels, north of the
Expressway.
Underwriters Laboratories is only one o{ the thriving industries to
locate in Huntington
Diversity dominates the industrial character of
Huntington. Marine radio equipment, automotive
parts, tools, boats, clothing, and fabricated metals are
all produced here. Music publishing, chemical and
plastic manufacture, and beverage production are
represented also.
Because of its central location on Long Island and
its quick accessibility to New York City, nearly 20
wholesale distributing companies have settled in
the Town. More than half have built their facilities
since 1970. And Newsday, Long Island's only daily
newspaper, moved its plant, headquarters, and 2,000
employees to Melville in 1979.

Near the center of the community in Greenlawn,
along Pulaski Road, the Hazeltine Corporation, with
over 2,000 employees, has its electronic plants and
national headquarters. On nearby Park Avenue,
Telephonics, a subsidiary of the Instrument Systems
Corporation, is housed in several buildings.
And yet, with all of this modern technological
industry, the rural past of Huntington still thrives. The
McGovern Sod Farms, along Route 110, grows fine
turf for Yankee Stadium, Shea Stadium, the United
Nations headquarters in New York City, and the
United States Military Academy at West Point.
Along Pulaski Road there are still farms. Richters
Orchard, which has been producing apples, peaches,
pears, and cider since 1900, still operates its own
roadside stand in East Northport. Small farms
continue to grow vegetables that are sold at roadside
stands.
Today, as you drive through outlying areas of the
Town, you'll see the sleek, contemporary office
buildings, often within walking distance of nurseries,
orchards, and farms. As more and more people are
discovering that Huntington is an ideal place to settle,
more and more light industries and offices are
following suit.
Although modern industrial Huntington keeps pace
with the fast-changing world of the late twentieth
century, rural Huntington peacefully continues as it
has for several centuries.

Shopping: Quality and Variety Close at Hand
Above: A [ountain enhances the modern elegance inside the Walt
Whil,mn Shopping Mall

Huntington Village
Shopping facilities in Huntington are varied and
conveniently located throughout the area. However,
they generally do not interfere with the tranquillity of
residential areas. The central shopping district of
Huntington Village is situated around the intersection
of Main Street and New York Avenue and represents
the largest retail concentration in Suffolk County.
Here, long-established stores are interspersed with
smart boutiques, trendy shops, and excellent restau-
rants that offer a wide range of international cuisine.
Many of the establishments are housed in nineteenth-
century buildings. There is extensive off-street
parking.
Cold Spring Harbor offers a wide range of quaint
shops and boutiques right in the heart of the restored
National Register Historic District. And the village of
Northport, located near the shores of Northport Bay,
reveals tiny brick-paved courtyards and colorful alley-
ways lined with charming quality shops and elegant
boutiques. There are also shopping areas in Green-
lawn, East Northport, and Elwood. All have ample
parking space.
New York Avenue, which runs south from Halesite
to Melville, is lined with scores of shops, national
chains, department stores, discount stores, and
restaurants. The most extensive concentration is
contained in the Walt Whitman Mall. Among the retail
department stores here are branches of Macy's and
Abraham and Straus. Other main thoroughfares also
lined with shops are Main Street, Jericho Turnpike,
and Larkfield Road.
Recently, the Huntington Square Mall in East
Northport opened, adding dozens more retail stores to
an already vast selection. A branch of Sears Roebuck
dominates the center. A number of smaller shopping
centers are conveniently scattered throughout
the Town.
Huntington's extensive variety of stores, shops, and
boutiques has traditionally attracted large numbers of
shoppers from surrounding areas. It can be said that a
shopper should be able to find just about anything he
needs in Huntington shopping facilities.

The Medical Prognosis: Very Good
Your health and that of your family are unusually well
provided for in Huntington. The 424-bed, voluntary,
nonprofit Huntington Hospital has a medical staff of
275 along with 1,200 employees and provides all diag-
nostic and therapeutic services. The 24-hour emergen-
cy department handles over 42,000 cases a year.
Cobalt therapy, treatment of cardiac stress, and
hemodialysis are among the newer specialized
services.
Now under construction is a four-story addition,
costing more than $19 million. This facility will house
a new and much enlarged nuclear-medicine
department, an expanded radiology unit, and a new
emergency department and obstetrical unit. A modern
coronary-care unit is also planned, which will include
a small interdenomination chapel-meditation room,
designed for patients and families.
The 250-member, all-volunteer Community First
Aid Squad responds to 3,400 calls a year in the
northwestern area of Town. Commack Volunteer
Ambulance Corps serves the Commack community.
The ambulance unit of the Melville Fire Department
employs cardiac-care telemetry, linked by radio with
the nearby Nassau County Medical Center, which
provides an instant reading of the patient's cardiac
condition and relays emergency treatment directions
from the hospital. Other fire department ambulance
services are Cold Spring Harbor, Halesite, Centerport,
and Northport.
The 930-bed Veterans Administration Medical
Center in Northport is associated with the Medical
School of the State University of New York at nearby
Stony Brook and includes residencies in medicine,
surgery, psychiatry, dentistry, pharmacy, and hospital
administration.
The Suffolk County Developmental Center is located
on a 465-acre campus in Melville and accommodates
1,400 patients of all ages and of varying levels of
mental retardation.
The Huntington YMCA has cardiovascular fitness
and weight-reduction programs as well as preventive
programs for lower-back care. The nonprofit
Geraldine Pederson-Krag Clinic and the Family
Service League provide outpatient mental health
services and marriage counseling. Starshine in
Northport furnishes free counseling for adolescents
suffering from drug abuse.

Well-rounded Cultural Activities
Twenty years ago, Huntington established the first
community arts council on Long Island. Today, the
private, nonprofit Huntington Arts Council, Inc.,
represents over 85 member organizations. The Town
of Huntington boasts the Heckscher Museum, with its
excellent collections, exhibitions, and lectures; the
Huntington Township Art League, which attracts
visual artists who study and exhibit their craft; the
New Community Cinema, noted for its film presenta-
tions and filmmakers' workshop; and the Long Island
Philharmonic Orchestra.
Also listed on the Arts Council's membership roster
are a number of dance companies including Eglevsky
Ballet Company of Long Island, the Long Island Dance
Company, the New York Dance Theatre, the North
Shore Dance Theatre, the Circle of Dance, and the
Contemporary Ballet Company.
Among the music groups are the Huntington
Township Concert Association and the Northport-
Commack-Smithtown Concert Association, which
sponsor an impressive series of concerts; the Long
Island Recorder Festival; the Huntington North Shore
Chapter of the Society for the Preservation and
Encouragement of Barber Shop Quartet Singing in
America; and many bands and chamber groups, as
well as the Sweet Adelines, the Huntington Men's
Chorus, Inc., and the Huntington Liederkranz Singers.
Various community theater groups stage
productions during the year.
The Heckscher Museum, owned by the Town but
operated autonomously, has an outstanding
permanent collection of American and European
paintings and sculptures. Changing exhibits are also
part of the museum's program. Admission is free, and
there is an open membership program for interested
individuals.
The 24-room Vanderbilt Museum in Centerport is
on the former 43-acre estate of William K. Vanderbilt.
Collections that Vanderbilt assembled as he traveled
throughout the world are on display as well as an
assortment of marine and wildlife specimens. The
adjacent Vanderbilt Planetarium is one of the dozen
largest and one of the two or three best-equipped
planetariums in the United States. Featured are a 60-
foot sky theater, a four-channel sound system, and a
16-inch reflecting telescope. Sky shows are presented
regularly.

The Whaling Museum in Cold Spring Harbor
celebrates the whaling days of the Village with
exhibits of fully equipped whale boats, ship models,
figureheads, photographs, tools, and scrimshaw.
Among the hundreds of scheduled events that are
presented during the year are several popular summer
extravaganzas. The Huntington Arts Council's Lively
Arts Festival takes place in June and the Huntington
Summer Arts Festival coordinated by the Council is
celebrated each 3uly and August. More than 100,000
persons attend these events each year held in the new
amphitheater in Heckscher Park and at the bandshell
in Northport Village Park.
The Huntington Township Art League, an
association of professional artists, sponsors a year-
round instruction agenda. The USDAN Center for the
Creative and Performing Arts attracts 1,400 youngsters
eight to eighteen years old for study programs and op-
portunities in the arts. Huntington's arts constituents
employ hundreds of people and add to the economic
base of the community as well as providing a quality of
life that attracts discerning home buyers.
Libraries
Huntington Public Library, with a book collection of
nearly 250,000 volumes, is the County's oldest and
largest library. Its business-reference collection has
been widely praised. There are also libraries in Cold
Spring Harbor, Commack, East Northport, Half
Hollow Hills, Harborfields, Northport, and South
Huntington. The Suffolk Cooperative Library System
provides that if a library does not have a particular
volume, it can request it from any library in the State.
The Town's libraries offer extensive programs of
lectures, concerts, and art exhibitions. A number of
them arrange theater and museum trips to New York
City for their subscribers.

Huntington has HART
Huntington is especially well served by public
transportation. There are four stations of the Long
Island Rail Road, a division of New York City's
Metropolitan Transit Authority, within the Town
limits. These are at Cold Spring Harbor, Huntington
Station, Greenlawn, and East Northport. Service to
and from the Big Apple to the vcest is frequent and
takes about one hour. In addition, service is also
provided to Stony Brook, home of a campus of the
State University of New York, and to Port Jefferson to
the east. Extensive, convenient parking areas at the
railroad stations and in shopping areas are provided
and maintained by the Town.
Several years ago, Huntington's town govern-
ment, with the assistance of federal, state, and Iocal
financing, put a new bus transportation system into
operation. It is called HART, the Huntington Area
Rapid Transit. The elderly and handicapped are
particularly accommodated by the use of "kneeling"
buses.
HART provides a number of services in its aim to
satisfy various aspects of the community. Monday
through Friday, commuters are taken by neighbor-
hood transport to the Long Island Rail Road Station
at Huntington Station. Fixed routes connect an
assortment of community centers such as the
Huntington Hospital, downtown Huntington, and the
Walt Whitman Mall. On Saturdays, special routes
terminating at shopping centers are available. In
addition, door-to-door service is provided for senior
citizens and other groups on special occasions. Suffolk
County, the MTA, and Greyhound provide service to
other communities.
Less than an hour away by car or limousine are JFK
and La Guardia airports. Newark Airport is an hour
and a half from here, and Long Island MacArthur
Airport in Ronkonkoma is about half an hour away.
There is additional service from Republic Airport,
located on Route 110, Farmingdale.
The Long Island Expressway and the Northern
State Parkway allow easy access to New York City and
New England as well as to nearby communities and
shopping areas in adjacent Nassau County.
The Long Island Lighting Company (LILCO)
provides electricity and gas; and the New York
Telephone Company, phone service.

A Broad Spectrum of Education
The eight public school districts of Huntington serve
about 53,000 students. According to The New York
Times" Guide to Suburban Schools, "an outstanding
group of school systems has been built in Suffolk
County--particularly in the Town of Huntington."
Every year, local high-school graduates are awarded a
generous share of scholarships to the nation's leading
colleges.
Almost 30 years ago, the Huntington school system
began to provide a broader spectrum of training for
the many pupils who did not plan to enter college.
Vocational education was instituted and a BOCES
(Board of Cooperative Educational Services) district
resulted. One quarter of the BOCES vocational-ed
students go on to college, while another quarter accept
jobs upon graduation and take postgraduate high-
school courses at night.
BOCES Special Education addresses the needs of
mentally retarded or otherwise handicapped pupils,

Richters Orchard has been synonymous with the finest,
homegrown fresh fruit throughout this region ever since
1900, and the great-grandmothers of today's customers

enjoy year-round. The farm is famous for its apples and
peaches, as well as its fresh cider, which contains no

A Bonanza of Recreational Diversions
The Huntington Recreation and Parks Department has
assured that every citizen from tot to senior has at his
disposal a year-round schedule of diverse activities.
Space and equipment are provided for golf, swimming,
camping, canoeing, sailing, ice-skating, tennis, the arts,
rifle and pistol practice, bowling, jogging, bicycling,
and organized team sports. The department also has
numerous special programs for the physically and
mentally handicapped.
Among the ever-expanding park system's facilities
is Meadoxvlark, with six lighted tennis courts, an
administration building, playground, and picnic and
garden areas. Otsego Park has a large complex of
lighted fields for softball, lacrosse, tennis, basketball,
handball, and other games. Bicycle and jogging tracks
are also a feature of this park. Dix Hills Park's 150
acres include a swimming pool, golf course, band shell,
playgrounds, and picnic areas. The Town ice-skating
rink is located here. In addition to the Olympic-size,
200- by 85-foot artificial ice-skating rink, there are a
comfortable lounge area, a snack bar, and lockers, as
well as a skate shop for rentals and skate sharpening.
The facility is open from December to March, and
skate rental is nominal.

Also within the Town are the West Hills County
Park in South Huntington, and Caumsett State Park in
Lloyd Harbor. Caumsett, formerly the Marshall Field
estate, is now open for nature study. The impressive
Georgian mansion on the grounds is a division of
Queens College and is used as an environmental study
center and teaching facility. The Target Rock National
Wildlife Refuge may be visited by appointment. It was
formerly the Ferdinand Eberstadt estate and includes a
quarter-mile beach front and a I 0-acre formal garden
with rhododendron, azalea, and nature trails.
Huntington's waterfront is well utilized for
recreational purposes. There are Town beaches,
reserved for residents only, at Asharoken Beach,

Centerport Beach, Crab Meadow Beach, Crescent
Beach, Fleets Cove Beach, Gold Star Battalion Park,
Hobart Beach, and West Neck Beach. One beach is

In winter and summer the Town Recreation Depart-
ment schedules special events such as ski trips and
bowling competitions, and sponsors an arts workshop,
riding lessons, and a rifle range.
Beyond the public facilities, there are many private
beach, golf, yacht, and tennis clubs operating in Hun-
tington. The YMCA has a full range of athletic and fit-
ness programs. An indoor swimming pool is on the
premises.
A comprehensive senior-citizen program under a

More than 250 hot meals are serx'ed daily at the Senior
Citizen Nutrition Center. Workshops, trips, and
tours occupy the leisure time of members of some
20 autonomous units.
The Community Organic Garden, situated on a
15-acre area in Greenlawn, is cultivated by
approximately 800 families. An annual fee is charged,
but those over 60 are permitted free participation.
Supplies are contributed by garden clubs and other
community groups. Gardeners, who grow vegetables
organically (without chemical fertilizers or pesticides),
provide their own tools.
Young and old alike may join any of the six garden
clubs that flourish in the Town. There are also two
African Violet societies in Huntington.
Among other clubs of a recreational nature are the
Audubon Club, the Huntington Boys' Club, the
Huntington Dog Club, Inc., the Huntington Sports
Club, the Long Island Antique Gun Collectors'
Association, and the Square Dancing Club.
In Cold Spring Harbor is the Fish Hatchery,
established in 1861 to stock the lakes and streams of
New York State with trout. It is open daily with a
nominal admission charge.
One of the nearby attractions is the Bayard Cutting
Arboretum in Oakdale. Its collection of trees includes
many of the largest evergreens growing on Long
Island. A rhododendron and flowering shrub garden
blooms spectacularly in the spring.
The Old Westbury Gardens, in nearby Old
Westbury, contain an extensive garden area of
100 acres. The Georgian Mansion on this estate
displays furniture of the eighteenth century. The
greenhouses alone are well worth a visit.
The Suffolk Marine Museum in West Sayville holds
exhibits of Great South Bay craft along with an oyster
vessel circa 1888. One wing of the museum harbors
rescue craft and marine memorabilia of the turn of the
century.
