Abstract

Final House approval was given on 5/17. This was a long full session battle in which Hoffman was able to maneuver us virtually unscathed through some very ~i~fficult situations. He deserves a "welldone" for t hTs~o.n e.

Bill went to House committee of the whole where no changes were made. Final House approval was given on 5/17. This was a long full session battle in which Hoffman was able to maneuver us virtually unscathed through some very ~i~fficult situations. He deserves a "welldone" for t hTs~o.n e. California (Local) Burllngame, CA: On 5/19 passed somewhat watered down coalition type ordinance by a vote of 4-0. Cypress, CA: City Council met on S/R issue and voted to continue matter to June 8. Slml Valley, CA: On 5/11, introduced S/R ordinance but took no action. First reading expected 5/18. Solano County, CA: 5/12, gave first reading approval to coalition type ordinance. Vote was 3/2, two negative votes withheld because of questions whether improved ventilation could accomplish a better result. We furnished them with ACVA studies and have offered to furnish expert witness. San Francisco, CA: 5/12, Golden Gate Restaurant Association Executive Director Cecilia Metz reports that after meeting with Supervisor Nelder regarding proposed restaurant S/R ordinance, that Nelder seemed willlng to revise ordinance to only require the restaurants accommodate those requesting to be seated in non-smoking areas. Legislative Support Activities Allies & Coalitions Attended Annual convention of California Coin Machine Association and invited to address them. CCMA President at last minute invited Philip Morris to show their tape on their federal excise tax problem and asked me to yield time to do it. The tape is welldone and had good impact. We were able to distribute TI supplied letter writing packet on federal excise tax to all attendees (about 150). CCMA will adopt new resolution on Federal Excise Tax. III. Next Week's Activities 5/18 - Sacramento: Hearing on ACA lq, SB 1.550, SB 1067. Tollison here to testify on ACA I~. 5/19 - Sacramento: Follow up on Federal Excise Tax. Hearing tonight in Monterey on S/R ordinance. Schreder will cover but make no statement as requested by local restaurant organization. Solano County:Hurrled up second reading on S/R ordinance. Proponents see their support eroding. 5/20 - Sacramento: "Sneak Attax" newspaper ad focused on Congressman Matsui. Making phone calls and preparing letters for local contact reaction. 5/21 - Rancho Mirage - second reading of S/R ordinance, Saldana is keeping the heat on.
