Weekly Activities Report Week of: May 11, 15, 1987 John D. Kelly
Abstract
H.B. 2069 on 5/16/87 passed Senate a substantially amended bill which adds to existing S/R law only a provision prohibiting employment discrimination against any person, smoker or non-smoker, who protests existing smoking policy in a state agency. Bill went to House committee of the whole where no changes were made. Final House approval was given on 5/17. This was a long full session battle in which Hoffman was able to maneuver us virtually unscathed through some very difficult situations.

H.B. 2069 on 5/16/87 passed Senate a substantially
amended bill which adds to existing S/R law only a
provision prohibiting employment discrimination against
any person, smoker or non-smoker, who protests existing
smoking policy in a state agency. Bill went to House
committee of the whole where no changes were made.
Final House approval was given on 5/17. This was a
long full session battle in which Hoffman was able to
maneuver us virtually unscathed through some very
difficult situations. He deserves a "welldone,' for
this one.

Association Executive Director Cecilia Metz reports
that after meeting with Supervisor Nelder regarding
proposed restaurant SIR ordinance, that Nelder seemed
willing to revise ordinance to only require the
restaurants accommodate those requesting to be seated
in non-smoking areas. Metz thanks us for our

background assistance but makes it clear that they
would prefer that we take no public action. We will
stay away until we see if Nelder really takes such a
low key approach.
