Had series of conversations with Bill Bates & Jim Gray regarding style and content of draft letter from Georgia Governor to Congressional Delegation regarding Federal Excise Tax. Discussed with Page Sutherland use of Bruce Bereano in Rockville council meeting. Discussed FET letter from Agriculture Commissioner in West Virginia to Congressional Delegation with Herb Nottingham. Discussed organization for Hampton, Norfolk~ and newport News hearings with Murray Jones (RJR). Requested Poffenberger communicate with Senator Roth regarding FET. Reported Salisbury, Maryland and Hampton Virginia City Council actions. " Discussed pending N. C. legislation with Roger Bone (TI lobbyist). Approved use of Virginia Delegate Robinson as local counsel in Norfolk tax hearing. Coordinated data with McMaster for South Carolina Governor letter to Congressional Delegation regarding FET. II. LEGISLATIVE SUPPORT ACTIVITY Discussed role as consultant for company training programs with local managers for Lorillard and Brown & Williamson. Discussed Allied organization report with Roger Bone. Asked Sterling Smith to advise Senators Smith and Doer and suggest they have "educational workshop" for the Chamber executive. Conferred with New Castle County, Delaware Chamber executive regarding more formal ties as first step in organization of an "Allies" group in Delaware. Discussed same concept with Delegate State Chamber lobbyist Bob Byrd. MISCELLANEOUS ACTIVITY Reviewed cllppings from GA., N.C., S.C., and MD. Sent letter to state lobbyists regarding Client list evaluation and TI supported organizations. Discussed Bereano request for Little Rock meeting and Rockville representation with Sector VP. Sought direction for handling Va. Employment Commission SR request. Participated in conference call with TI staff. Advised Sector VP regarding contribution requests in Md. and Va. Discussed coordination of South-Carolina political contributions with Johnson and Jones. Began regional lobbyist evaluation program. Held discussion with Delaware lobbyists concerning alternative choices for counsel. Reviewed with Page his role in lobbyist evaluation and recommendations. Advised Page concerning the staff conference telephone call. Fixed appointment with Clemson Economics Professor Lindsay. Continued communication concerning FET and reported same to Walter Woodson.
