This smoking restriction proposal would have restricted smoking in private industry as well as city-owned buildings. Councilman Daryl Revoldt however proposed a policy or ordinance be voted on before the full council on Tuesday, 5726787 which would restrict smoking to designated areas in enclosed buildings owned, leased or controlled by the city. No reference to private industry. This meeting will be held at the Council Chambers, 145 North Main Street, at 7:00 pm. Our contact in North Canton is Barry Adelman, Owner of Adco Distributors T&C, 221 Cherry Avenue. There will be a hearing on Monday, 5/18/87 Monday, 4/20/87 st 6:30 p.m. public hearing for all public. This hearing was a simple presentation by the proponents. Thre were not many people present. GASP, local lung association and a doctor spoke. No future date for hearing has been set. Mr. Jim Carsten, Akron General Tobacco and Mr. Bill Owen, Owner of a restaurant called "Jack Homer" will be present. Hearing has been tentatively rescheduled for Monday, 6/I/87 Hearing on Monday, 5/11/87 at 5:30 p.m. There will be a hearing on Thursday, 4/30/87 before the Health and Safety Committee at 2:00 p.m. Summary : Require certain public or private buildings, depending on the number of people who work there, to have smoke-free areas. It would also require smoke-free restrooms, elevators, lunch rooms and "any areas where passive smoking would be a health hazard". This would affect all areas except cities or villages where such ordinances already exist. Employers would have six months to develop plans to provide smoking areas.
