i AP 05/13 1844 BRF--Poland-Prices ~o~--~ NORTHFIELD, Minn. (~) -- ~e "No Smoking" signs in Waterford To.ship's p~lic parks have been removed after the chairman of the to.ship's board of supervisors realized that the board never officially adopted the ordinance, the chai~an said We~esday. "~ere never was an ordinance in effect," said Ed Terry, chai~an of the Waterford To.ship Board of Supervisors. "Not being full-time gover~ent officials, we found out we had not followed every letter of the law." On Monday, after starting the correct procedure to adopt such an ordinance, the board decided it had generated too much public opposition and dropped the idea. Before the mistake was caught, televison crews from NBC and PBS c~e to the rural fa~ing h~let about 30 miles south of Minneapolis, and the case drew national attention as the first known ban of smoking in a p~lic park in ~erica. "The best thing that could happen is let the thing die," said Terry, a full-t~e fa~er. The three led-and-white signs were erected in the to.ship's parks April 23 following the township's March i0 annual meeting at which 30 people voted for the smoking ban on all p~lic property in the township, including its two parks. The supervisors mistakenly thought that action meant that an ordinance had been adopted, Terry said. LEXINGTON HERALD-LEADER. LEXINGTON, KY., WEDNESOAY, MAY 6, 19~7 Stumbo will protect tobacco Kentucky .farmers face decreasing profits ~'om the declinin8 tobacco ~dus., try. Once Kentucky's most profitable farm crop, tobacco appears increasingly unsta- ble. We have seen similar pattenzs devel- op in the Midwestern United Staces, where many fazmers lost everything they bad. Aid was attempted through grants and subsidies, but the problems remained. A new approach to this problem is needed. Grady Stumbo has • plan to protect and secure the future of Kentucky agricul. tare, He will support and protect the tobacco industry and the price suppor~ s3~tem. Stumbo will take substantial steps to ensure, future agricultural growth in Kentucky by promot/ng cultivation o[ more non-traditional crops, Stumbo's corn- prehensive plan for overall growth and t~ture stability also includes state involve- ment in securing long-term contracts be- tween mrmers and major food processing companies and committing more re- s~urces to the University of Kentucky's ,gricultural research programs. Support Grady Stumbo and secure Kentucky's agricultural future. SCOTT GRIME~ Lexing[on TI19810028
