Abstract

As you know Senator Bob Krueger (D-TX), appointed by Governor Richards to the seat vacated by Lloyd Bentsen, has made several unfair and erroneous statements about the tobacco program. In addition, he introduced S. 652, a bill to eliminate the tobacco price support program.

Myers Mr. John Parker Mr. William Sprague As you know Senator Bob Krueger (D-TX), appointed by Governor Richards to the seat vacated by Lloyd Bentsen, has made several unfair and erroneous statements about the tobacco program. In addition, he introduced S. 652, a bill to eliminate the tobacco price support program. Senator Krueger is continuing his assault on tobacco in his press re-election campaign. I have enclosed a transcript of one of his ads. Campaign/freedom of speech laws give a great deal of leeway to those running for office. However, I believe that those running the ads -- namely television and newspaper outlets -- deserve to know exactly what the facts are about the tobacco program. If each of you gentlemen could take a few minutes and write a letter to the press outlets on the enclosed list, I believe it would go a long way toward at least making the facts known. If you can encourage others to write as well, so much the better. I have sent you a portion of the mailing labels and a complete list of media contacts. Please feel free to write all these folks if you can. Each of you knows the tobacco program far better than I, but I have also enclosed a fact sheet on the tobacco program.
