As you kno~v, Citizens Against Government Waste (CAGW) is requesting the Institute
contribute funds for the production of"Weird Science," a new publication that purports to
expose federally "taxpayer-funded research projects that have little or no scientific merit."
The group will target agencies such as the National Institutes of Health, National Institute
of Mental Health, the National Science Foundation, and the Environmental Protection
Agency. In addition to researching agency spending, the publication will look at the issue
of risk-assessment.
The group is primarily known for its annual summar3, of Congressional pork-barrel
projects, known as the "Pig Book."
CAGW is requesting we consider contributing $25,000 toward this effort. Based on my
research, which included calls to CAGW, and discussions with Clausen Ely, I recommend
we make a contribution of $5,000. ~ -
While CAGW could assist on ETS, as they mention in their proposal, I believe that given
the wide array of budget topics they plan to cover, our story could get lost in the mix.
CAGW is about to do some important work, however, I do not believe that out interests
would be best served with a contribution over the recommended $5,000.
