This three-year project aims to inform in public, parochial and.private schools ~n grades
? through 12 about the health dangers of cigarette smoking and to involve them &n s~oki~$-
hontrol programs~ The ultimate objective of this project is that the teachers a~ter "th~s ~
experience'will be able to motivate s~ccessfully their students not to smoke ar to stop, .
Teachers selected as health coordinators from their schools will be divided ~ four %'[-~7~
groups. The groups will meet at least 5 times during the school year and will ~e assisted
by members of the Onondaga County Interagency Committee. The groups will develop their
own methods to be used in educating students in their own schools. At the first group
meeting, am evaluation instrument will be given to determine the health coord~uator's level
of knowledge, attitudes and behavior coDcerning smoking. The health ccurdinators will hold
follow-up meetings periodically at their own schools with their fellow staff members, and
thus help develop a positive attitude toward smoking among all the faculty ~m~each coordi-
nator will keep his faculty informed of the activities of the groups and eac~ faculty will
develop its own approach to education.

G DesCription: This project, by building on a large study of the attitudes and values of
college students
at the ~niversity of Wisconsin, will investigate the relationship of changes i,
smokin~
attitudes and behavior among these students to social and psychological factors. This
study
includes ~100 students of the freshman class of 1965. This.class will be sub-sampled
to
study selective factors in performance as well as changes in values, self-image and
smokln~
behavior. The project will.try to identify the characteristics 9f those students who
are
likely to~startlsmokin~ on arrival to college. Over a three year period, successive
sub- ..
samples will be'drawn in an experim6nta~ design which includ6s discussion
