Abstract

I've read the synopsis of Kermit Goell's play about Pocahontas. Aside from the fact that the Institute should not undertake to support a musical when it cannot even support raw product research, I find Goell's plot atrocious. To depict Pocahontas as a drunken brawler in London horrifies my every emotion. If there were historical justification for Goell's version (which I doubt), I prefer to let such realism rest in the musty archives of the British Museum.

March 13, 1962 Dear Carl, I've read the synopsis of Kermit Goell's play about Pocahontas. A musical should be light and amusing, not sordid and tragic, and I don't want my illusion of Pocahontas to be disturbed. I want her to continue to be the pretty heroine, the joint savior of Jamestown, and the ancestor of Jim and hundreds of other Bowlings in the United States. Please tell Mr. Goell that the Institute can do nothing for him -- and I do not regret it in this instance. Jerry Brooks has the right touch. his play will be produced. I still hope Sincerely, George V. Allen. Mr. Carl Thompson, Vice President Hill and Knowlton, Inc. 150 East Forty-second Street New York 17, New York TI54850133
