THE BOARD OF DIRECTORS of the American Cancer Society has been likened to the magnifying lens that can focus energy from the sun to produce a powerful effect. The board converges the energies, experience, and skill of its members into a single force for cancer control greater than the sum of all its parts. Here, in this 1961 edition of K~ow Your Bocrg of D~'ec~ors, we view the team which leads our attack against cancer. They are men of science and medicine, industry, finance, communications, gov- ernment and law, philanthropy, education, the arts. In all, there are 86 members, 18 of vehom are Honorary Life Directors, dis- tinguished men and women who have served as regular board members and continue to benefit the Society with their counsel and guidance. Of the 68 remain- ing members-half professional, half lay- 32 are Directors-at-Large and 86 are Regional Directors, representing the Society's 60 Divisions in every s~ate of the Union and the District of Columbia. At least three times each year the full Board of Directors convenes to consider and guide the course of the Society's national programs of research, education and service. In the democratic process of our American heritage our board mem- bers with their special skills keep fluid and vital the resources which will one day bring victory over cancer. Through K~o~ Your Boer~ of D~e~- ~ors, we are proud to present on the ~ol- lowing pages these men and women whose purposefulness and determination reflect the spirit of the American Cancer Society.
