Judd, Jr. Meridian House International is a non-profit institution which conducts international edncational and cultural programs. Through its services to international visitors and the presentation of lectures, semi- nars and exhibitions of an international character, Meridian House serves as a doorway to the United States for thousands of international visitors, as well as a window on the world for Americans interested in world affairs. Its affiliates are the Visitor: Program Service ('VPS), the Washington International Center ('WIC), the National Council for In- ternational Visitors (NCIV), the International Visitors Information Service (IVIS), and The Hospitality and Information Service for Dip- lomats (THIS). A tax-exempt corporation, Meridian House Inter- national is financed by government contracts and grants, foundation support, and corporate and individual gifts. It owns and operates Meridian House, a Washington landmark of exceptional architectural quality which is on the National Register of Historic Places. T142180097

Meridian House International Contributors: January i to December 31, 1984 Meridian House International (MHI), a non- profit educational and cultural institution, promotes International understanding by assl,~ting foreign diplomats and visitors, and by conducting world affairs seminars and International cultural presentations. It is classified by the Internal Revenue Service as a tax-exempt organization under Section 501 (c)(3) of the Code. Almost every activity of Meridian House and its affiliated organi- zations Is conducted through the combined participation of both the public and private sectors. Private sector donations are crucial to the success of MHI's mission of promoting inter- national understanding. This funding is received from individuals, foundations, and corporations in several forms: cash, stocks, bequests, gifts-in-kind and grants. But another notable method Is the hours given by volunteers, whose time and devotion depict the spirit of American voluntarism at its best. Meridian House International grate- fully acknowledges the work of all its vol- unleers, and especially salutes: its Board of Trustees and Officers; Mr. William F. McSweeny, President of Occidental Inter- national and Chairman of the MHI Board of Trustees; Mrs, Sam A. Nunn and Mrs. Wil- Iiamson Stuckey, Co-Chairmen of the 1984 Meridian House Ball; Senator Gale W. McGee, Chatrman of the 1984 MHI Corporate Cam- paign; and Mrs. Leonard L. Silverstein, Chairman of the committee which organized the highly successful Babar the Elephant exhibition, benefit and school outreach proj- ect. MHI also acknowledges the importance of its contracts and grants with U.S. Govern- ment agencies, particularly the United States Information Agency and the Agency for Inter- national Development. The effective part- norshlp between the public and private sec- tors (combining both funds and expertise) achieved by MHI's activities stretches the tax dollar and allows private citizens "and Institutions to play a role in the Nation's for- elgn policy. Public sectorcontracts and grants were received in 1984 from the United States Information Agency (to assist foreign official visitors, to develop program and support services for non-profit organizations like Meridian House across the country, to con- duct a series for diplomats on American Tra- ditional values, and to help with arrange- ments for the U.S.-Japanese Cultural Con- ferences); from the Agency for International Development (to give orientation and train- ing to foreign development specialists), the Federal Aviation Administration (to support volunteers who greet international arrivals at Dulles International Airport), and the D.C. Community Humanities Council (to develop and carry out a school outreach project for the 1985 exhibition of Mexican Masks). The World Affairs Seminars and international art exhibitions are carried out by MHI directly The main work of assisting international vis- itors is carried out through affiliates: Visitor Program Service, Washington International Center, International Visitors Information Service, The Hospitality and Information Service, and the National Council for Inter- national Visitors. Following is a list of donors who made a contribution from January 1 to December 31, 1984, only. Lists for previous years are avail- able by calling MHI.
