THE PRESIDENT'S
MESSAGE
The eventual elimination of cancer as a significant factor in our lives will
ha~e its b~ginning in ideas. "[he encouragerr~.a_t_of .th~ best ininds*to
become committed to ..~otving t'l~6 ~ ~robtem is.~.corne~stone on
~,'~1~" fu~ure:~~ i~ill rest. ,The Damon Runyon-Walter Winchell
Cancer Fund devotes its funds exclusively to the- training of scientists aUhe
be~nning of their creative careers. By supporting research fellows it; the
finest cancer research laboratories in America, the Fund has made a
singularly spectacular contribution to the progress made to date in the
elimination of cancer.
In 19~0, 79 fellowships were av, arded for the younginve.~tigators beginning
their career in cancer research, in addition, 66 fellowships were rene~ved for
an additional year of cancer research. A Scientific Advisory Committe,
composed of the nation's most distinguished scientists, chooses the recip-
ients of fellowships from an applicant list of exceptional candidates. With
present resources available to the Fund, less than one-half of those deemed
deserving of an opportunity to engage in cancer research can be funded.
The Fund has authorized creation of a new special category of fellowship,
the Clinical Fellowship, to encourage development of research in clinical
aspects of cancer. Support for young investigators addressing clinical
research problems in cancer has been sparse in the past.
The Board of Directors was further strengthened during the last year by the
addition of Mr. David A. (Sonny) Werblin, president of Madison Square
Garden, New York City and Doctor Gerald P. Murphy, Institute Director
of Roswell Park Memorial Institute, Buffalo, New York.
Our Board of Directors believes that the best way to win the fight against
cancer is to invest funds in the support of postgraduate fellowships. Cancer
will not likely be controlled by one dramatic scientific breakthrough but
rather by a series of scientific advances achieved by many individual
research contributions. The application of these important pieces of new
knowledge will lead to the prevention or control of one cancer after
another.
Since its inception, the Fund has supported more than 6130 postgraduate
fellowships. Most of these individuals continue to actively pursue careers in
research, teaching, or clinical activities which have a substantial impact
upon cancer.
We are proud of the record of the Fund in its contribution to the elimina-
tion of cancer as a significant health risk.
Charles A. LeMaistre, M.D.

The Board of Directors appoints a Scientific Advisory
Committee (S.A.C.) for the purpose of reviewing
applications. S.A.C. is comprised of 16 to 18 eminent
scientists, both M.D.'s and Ph.D.'s. These doctors are on
the staffs of various prestigious medical schools, research
organizations and hospitals throughout the country.
Members of S.A.C. are appointed for a four year term by
the Board of Directors.
S.A.C. meets three times each year for two-day t~-riods to
rank the applications received. Each is forwarded to at
least two re=tubers of the committee well in advance of the
meeting date, so that an in-depth review.may hz made.

The applications are then presented by the reviewers who
offer their conclusions as to the pertinence of the project--
the competence of the individual applicant--the organi-
zational support he would have available to him--as well
as the individual to whom he reports. All members
participate in a thorough discussion before a vote as to
priority is taken.
Each pertinent application is ranked on a 1 to 5 scale and
fellowships are awarded on the basis of these rankings to
the extent financial resources will allow. The awards are
made on behalf of the Board of Directors by the Executive
Director.
