Dear Sir:
I would like to take a few minutes of your time to voice my
opinion on Congressional attempts to ban smoking aboard domestic
airline flights. ~
Legislation to ~. smoking~/~/board commercial aircraft is
unwarranted and inap~~~Y ~easons among them
A 1987 Airline~otsAssociation poll determined airline
passengers, by a margin of 87% to 12% believe that the current
practice of separating smoking and non-smoking passengers is a
reasonable policy that respects the rights of each
Measurements of nicotine in aircraft cabins indicate that
the amount of cigarette smoke in the nonsmoking section is so
small that it would take the equivalent of 224 hours, or nine
days of non-stop flying, for nonsmokers to be exposed to the
nicotine equivalent of a single cigarette
A smoking ban would pose serious compliance problems, and.
significant administrative and practical problems for airlines
and passengers alike
In closing I would like to thank you for your support
against airline smoking bans and for your continuing support for
individual and business freedom.
Respectfully yours,
Jim Williams ~og-~

Senator Pete Wilsoq, U.S.S.
U.S. Senate
Washington, D.C. 20510
Dear Senator Wilson:
As a lonE-time supporter and constituant, I hope you
will give serious thought to opposing any additional federal
legislation that would further restrict or ban cigarette
smoking on commercial airlines.
I am a nonsmoker and frequent flyer who believe.s the
airlines do a good job o£ accomodating their pattens without
mandating smoking restrictions. Indeed, with the recent rash
of airline crashes and safety problems, these are the concerns
of those of us who fly the sometimes "not-so-friendly" skys.
Beyond the health issue claimed By the anti-smokers, I
believe this is a business and personal rights issue which
government should stay away from. It is my hope this approach
is in step with your vie%~oints -- I believe It is w~th your
constituants.
Sincerely,

U.S. House o£ Representatives
Washington, D.C. 20515
Dear Congressman:
As a constituant-supporter of yours, I ~ope you will
take a minute to reconsider your previous position of
supporting any legislative measure to ban smoking on
commercial airlines.
Legislation to ban smoking is unwarranted, smoking is
already restricted, every passenger is guaranteed ~ "no-smoking
seat" -- at tSe cost of reducing or el~minaZing t~e smoking
section.
As a £requen~ flyer and non-smoker, I have never been
Bothered by smeke on an airplane. ~y concern, and t~at of
my fellow passengers, is that government doesn't waste its
time and Borrowed money on a ~rivilous ~ssue w~en everyday
air-disasters are taking lives. Paulty airplanes, suspect
traffic-control systems, pilot errors -- t~ese are the
serious issues our elected representatives m~st address.
Thank you "for your consideration and concern.

Dear Senator Cranston:
It has been my pleasure to support your past election
efforts and as a Ions-time constituant supporter, I hope you
will consider seriously my thoughts against supporting any
legislation that will further regulate smoking aboard commer-
cial aircraft.
As a nonsmoker and frequent flyer, my concern is with the
declinin~ air-safety records of our airlines, overburdened
~raffic-control systems, sub-standard equipment, etc.
While I encourage and applaud your efforts in the safety
area, I believe airlines do accomodate nonsmokers and smokers
very well and beyond this point it becomes a personal rishts
and business rights issue that government, with ~ts spend-now,
pay later policies, should stay away from.
Thank you for considering this position and please keep
up the good work.
Sincerely,
Ronald L. Saldana
