James P. Caruning 824 Laurel Road Yeadon, PA. 19050 September 27, 1987 Senator Arlen Specter, U.S.S. U.S. Senate Washington, D.C. 20510 Dear Senator Soecter, Once Again I am Writing to you to express my opposition to legislation banning smoking on airlines. We're not talking about segve~.tin~ smokers, we are talking outright ban. Unbelievable in light of the fact that a non-smoker is guaranteed,a seat, ~ ~moke~-.Ls not; the vast majority of seats are non-smoking, with smoking completely banned on flights of small planes~ complaints on airlines have been negligible concerning smoking compared to other consumer complaints from airline passengers. ~easurements of nicotine in the aircraft cabins indicate that the amount of cigarette smoke in the nonsmoking section is so small that it would take the equivalent of 224 hours, or nine days of non-stop flying for nonsmokers to be exposed to the "nicotine equivalent" of a single cigarette. N~i%~er the Transportation Subcommittee of the Appropriations Committee nor the Aviation Subcommittee of the Commerce Committee has held hearings or established any record supporting a smoking ban. Using the appropriations process %o bring about an airline smoking ban requires using airport operations %o oo].ice the ban. This could also result in a loss of vital f~ndings to airports during the implementation stage. Thanking you for your continuing support against airline smoking bans. : Sincerely yours, ~,/'/ James P. Canning T!0045-0861
