Dear Senator Metzenbaum:
I am writing you at this time to express my concern in regard to
legislation you will he facing in the fall pertaining to attempts to
ban smoking aboard domestic airline flights.
I urge you to vote "n6" on this piece of legislation which is both
unnecessary and unfair.
I am aware of the fact that a Ban on flights of two hours or less was
passed in the House last month. This very disturbing event has prompted
me to seek your assistance at this time.
Smoking aboard aircraft is already restrictive; every passenger is
guaranteed a "no smoking" seat, even if a smoking section must be reduced
or eliminated to satisfy that guarantee. As a smoker, I have been
victimized by this policy in the past and suffered in silence.
A smoking Ban would pose serious compliance problems, and may in fact
create additional on board fire hazards by encouraging smoking in
lavatories.
There are additional facts to support why this piece of legislation
should not pass. Facts I am sure you are aware of. it is my sincere
hope that you will examine the issue appropriately and vote "no" when
this legislation comes before you.
Sincerely,
]~arold J. McGuirk

Dear Mr. Wylie:
I am writing you at this time to voice my concern about your recent
failure to vote on legislation that would ban smoking on domestic
airline flights.
The facts on this issue "cry out" for a response. A recent poll
conducted by the Airline.Pilots Association determined that 87% of
airline passengers believe that the current policy in effect on
flights is a "reasonable policy that respects the rights of both
smokers and non-smokers."
The ventilation systems aboard today's aircraft provide each non-
smoking passenger with the opportunity to.clean the surrounding air
by simply reaching up and opening the vent.
There are additional facts that show why this piece of legislation
should have been defeated. I h6pe that in the future you will view
these facts and vote appropriately.
Sincerely,
Harold J. gcGuirk
