August 28, 1987 Senator Ted F. Stevens, U.S.S. U.S. Senate Washington, DC 20510 Dear Senator Stevens: Recently the House of Representatives passed a Department of Transporbation appropratio~s bill %hat will ban smoking on all domestic flights of less than 2 hours. The bill is now in the Senate Appropra%ions Committee and is scheduled to be reviewed sometime in September. As a businessman, tax- payer and a smoker who frequently flys all around Alaska I strongly urge %o defeat this measure. I have discussed this issue with many of my friends, customers, smokers and nonsmokers and we feel that the current smoking/nonsmoklng seating arrangement on airplanes is just fine and working well. New legislation to ban smoking is.not needed because smoking on flights is already sharply res%ricted. Every passenger that requests a nonsmoking seat gets one, even if it means reducing or eliminating the smoking section. Enough is enough! As for the smoke being harmful, the National Academy of Sciences said late last year that %here's nothing in the scietific literature showing casual exposure to tobacco smoke in public places to be a health risk. That includes Airplanes. Again, I strongly object to any smoking ban on any flight here in Alaska or elsewhere and sincerely hope you will support my feelings on this issue when the time comes to vole. Sincerely, Ronald E. Diltz ~/ P.O. Box ll0g50 Anchorage, AK 99511 TI0045-0778

August 28, 1987 Honorable Don Young, M.C. U.S. House of Representatives Washington, DC 20515 There is currently an attempt in congress to ban smoking aboard domestic airline flights of two hours or less. I would like to thank you for your support against this ban and urge you to continue bo oppose any such legislation. New-legislation to ban smoking is not needed because smoking on flights is already sharply restricted. Every passenger is guaranteed a no-smoking seat, even if a smoking section must be reduced or eliminated to satisfy that guarantee. I am a frequent flyer, especially here in Alaska and I feel that the current policy is just fine. Most of the flights I take are from Anchorage and are usually an hour or less in length. Again, I strongly object to smoking bans on any flight here in Alaska and I sincerely hope you will support me on this issue. Si~,cerely,. " . .. -- ~onald E. Diltz P.0. August hS, 1987 Senator Frank H. Murkowskl, U.S.S. U.S. Senate Washington, DC 20510 Dear Sir: Recently there was an attempt to ban smoking on all domestic airline flights of 2 hours or less. This measure was passed in the House of Representatives by a narro~ margin. This was done on 5he House Floor ~ithout prior congressional hearings or discussion of the issue. I know that the Airline Pilots Association just to name one, opposes this ban. It is my understanding that this Department of Transportation appropriations bill is now in the Senate Appropriations Committee and will be reviewed sometime in September. I would like to request your supportto defeat this measure that I feel is not necessary and is not really supported by anyone but a few over zealous anti-smokers. I think that the current smoking/nonsmoking arrangement {s just fine. New legislation to ban smoking on flights is not needed because smoking on flights is already sharply restricted. Every passenger that requests a nonsmoking sea~ gets one, even if it means reducing or eliminating the smoking section. Enough is enough. I am a businessman and spend considerable time and money flying all over Alaska and I enjoy my right to smoke and I think I've given enough to the anti-smokers already. I strongly object to smoking bans on domestic flights and sincerely hope you will support me on this issue. Thank you, Ronald E. Diltz 6-/ P.O. Box 110950 Anchorage, AK 99511 TI0045-0780

AUgUSt 27, 1987 The Honorable Wendell H. F?~d SR-173A Russell Senate Office Building Washington, D.C. 20510-1701 Dear Senator Ford: It is our understanding that the subcommittee on Transportation plans to hold a hea~ing in the near future on the issue of banning smoking on commercial air flights. My husband and I both enjoy smoking, and at the same time, respect the ~ights of those who do not. I am sure you are awa~e of the current ~estrictions imposed on smoke~s. Smoking on airline flights is al~eady sharply restricted and passengers a~e guaranteed no-smoking seats, even if the designated smoking a~ea has to be reduced o2 eliminated. It seems that the tobacco industry, one of the most vital industries in Kentucky, has taken enough abuse lately. The regula~ increases in state and federal cigarette excise taxes, attempts to ban advertising and p~omotion of tobacco p~oducts, smoking ~est~ictions in the workplace and public areas, and now a p~oposed smoking ban on airlines a~e just a few of the actions which are devastating to the tobacco industry. Your aggressive action and commitment to protect the rights and livlihoods of tobacco farmers and the American public would be greatly appreciated by all, but in particular, by those you represent who will be economically harmed and deprived of thei~ f~eedom of choice. .S TE SEP August 17, 1987 TO: SENATOR CARL M. LEVIN, U.S.S. U. S. SENATE WASHINGTON , DC 20510 FROM: K. D. UILLIAMS SUBJECT: SMIKING ABOARD AIRCRAFT I wish to inform you I am very much against any further restrictions regarding smoking aboard aircraft. I believe the government is going overboard on this issue, not to mention the waste of time, effort and tax papers hard earned dollars. Smoking aboard aircraft is already restricted, in which every passenger is guaranted a non smoking seat even if the smoking section must be reduced or eliminated to satisfy that guarantee. This. type of restriction is nothing more than discrimination against the smbker. Thls. type of restriction could cause a fire hazard and some people will try to. smoke bending over in the seat or in the restrooms. I am asking you to support me on this issue. K o D.
