Spoke with Jacobson about the Spokane sting operation to be undertaken by
an anti-group out there. Here's the deal...
Last year the antis joined us in support of a VOLUNTARY approach to
retailers and sales to minors ... we put out a bunch of material. The
Council still insisted on a law, including retail licensing.
This year the antis want to start a sting operation to gain a baseline
level of retail sales to minors, then do an educational program and then
sting again in 10 months or so to see if the education program worked and
then go back to the council and tell them it worked and get them to repeal
the licensing law.
Well, an RJR sales rep out there is hot to join forces with the antis on
this sting operation and the RJR field operative bucked the decision to
Jacobson who said he thought we'd be crazy to join in this effort and that
the retailers would get their butts stung all over the place and get a
bunch of rotten publicity in the bargain.
As it stands now, the sting operation will proceed with or without us and
Jacobson is waiting for the RJR salesman to come to his senses. If he does
he says he may indeed wanna send a copy of the article and a letter to the
retailers who've signed up for the ItL campaign, warning them of the
operation.
Since I'm out, I've asked him to keep MBoisse updated on events. WW
