A lucky few will get a taste of the action next month, when the Richard Petty Driving Experi- ence bring NASCAR-style stock cars to CMS for a nine-day event that Is already sold out. Duffy said he hopes to contract with a firm to set up at his track to offer fans the chance to ride in or actually drive a high-powered TARGET GRAND PRIX NOTES racing machine for next season. Of course, he will not be able to tell which one would be appropri- ate until he gets a sample hlm- self. "I am going to get behind the wheel of a few of those cars," Duffy said. Practice crashes: The first day of competition at CMS was marred by two crashes during the morning practice sessions- Indy Lights driver Boris Derichebourg spun going into Tum 2 and hit the wall. Derichebourg was taken to Loy- ola University Medical Center in Chicago for observation after being diagnosed with a concus- sion at the CART Medical Center atthetrack. Later in the morning, Al Unser Jr. hit the Turn 2 wall and de- stroyed his primary car for the CART race. A CART official said the mishap simply "knocked the wind" out of Unser, and he was able to qualify 24th in his backup car. Luiz Garcia also brushed the wall and did not record a qualify- ing time. He will start 27th in today's lineup. Fan promotion announced: CART Chairman Andrew Craig held a press conference at the track on Saturday to announce the Fan Appreciation Sweep- stakes leading up to the season- endine M lbor 500 at F t ns Calif-, on Oct.37- Starting next month, fans will be able to fill out entry blanks at Firestnne dealerships, K,Mart and Circuit City stores and Penske Auto Centers to win prizes such as a Toyota Tundra pickup truck or a trip around the world to see CART races in North America, South America.
