The Industry - Areas of Controversy
. Health Issues
Our industry is accused of attempting to hide the
health risks of smoking, and is criticized simply for
being in the business of selling cigarettes.
. Youth Issues
Even though laws exist in all 50 states establishing a
minimum age for the sale of cigarettes, many
underage children and teenagers still smoke
cigarettes. Our adversaries claim the tobacco
industry stimulates and exploits the problem of
underage smoking by intentionally marketing to
youth.
. Credibility Issues
As a for-profit industry, any statements we make on
these issues are seen as self-serving and defensive
and therefore to be distrusted.
