PROJECT VENOGE - NO 0275
Objective
To d'evelop a9, mg, tar cig,arettedelivering ac1ean and'fresh
taste without pronounced menthol cooling sensation.
Summary
3P and 3C1 cigarettes were smoked by Panei A and found to deliver
the right taste characteristics. Suggestions were made in order
to proei'uceprototu, pes in the sameliine but d'el'ivezing cven lessmei;LYrol cooling, sensationi.
Description
Tb reach the right level of freslIness, we developed EAC-2~8 and'0 i:'t,C-Z30 which have the sar:.c
composition as EAC-llti but containing
4010 g and 600 g of inenthui per 25 liters.
At the same time, trials were n-:ade using EAC-231 and EAC-232'
which are variants ot PMS-AC containing menthol. These flavours.

expected from these prototypes is fresh and clean but still
tobacco-like without non tobacco distinct notes.

PROJECT NILE - NO'4024
Objective
To develop a flavour system for a fully expanded blend cigarette
with an American blend taste direction.
Description
In order to avoid contamination of the ETNA installation
traces of a new casing material, development was only an
solution.
with
aftercut
The main taste target is to deliver a smooth, rich Arnerican.blend
taste. The aftercut solution EAC-229 was developed so as to
include concentrated extracts of the products usually
incorporated'at different steps of a normal primary run.
Evaluation
Prototypes were made with a tobacco blend sprayed with the
standard ETNA casing and 2'3.1 liters of EAC-229 sprayed after
expansioni. Panel A pointed~out the improvement of the taste
compared to non-flavoured prototypes but the taste is still too
much to the woody cellulosic side.
Fol!low-up.
A new version of EAC-229 will be developed in order to add more
sweet, aromatic notes to the smoke.
PROJECT THAiIES - NO 0724 / PROJECT DANUBE - NO 0150
Objective
To develop cigarettes at various tar levels with non-tobacco and
distinct taste directions.

RESEARCH ' AI4DDiiUELOPIWIENT, NEUCHATEL - QUARTERLY REPORT
Description
To explore a wide range of aromatic directions, cigarettes were
mad'e with a tobacco flavoured with~ seven different flavours :
- citrus~
- floral
- fruity
- mint (non-mentliol)
- anise
- spicy
- vanilla
The taste evaluation result of these products clearly showed that
the taste delivered by these prototypes is found by all the
part-icipants tc be distinctive and less tobacco-like than the
usual product. As the participants were not used' to smoking such
cigarettes, it was almost impossible to determine a preference
even if there is al clear tendenc~.~ to accept the ones evoking
current foodistuii products (icitrus, fruity, mint, anise,,
vanilla) .
Folllo['-up.
The same exercise will be repeated in project Danube by
ir.curporatinq flavoured granules in a plug-spacu-pl:ug filter
type. The expected in:provement of the Danube type versus Thames
type is tc ci(,liver a cleaner taste ai-,d a sharper cliaracter of
e-ch aroma, especially for citrus no'_es.
PROJECT HOGGAR - NO 0165
Ob-jective
To give assistance to the ~Igeriani Mlor, opoly (SNTA) to improve
their ficg, gar cigaretce by appl,~ing flavour and casing.
Descriiption
The taste of the cigarettes produced during our first stay in
A1c,eria: was found to be smooth, full ar.d aromatic. The casing, und
flavour helpecl to cover the wocdy earthy taste deliverecI i)y the
ccally availab:ie tobacco and~ to improved the tasie cualit?r up to
a satisfyinglevel.
A fine tuning trial was rur. in order to improve minor details
~uch as slight spotting on.the cigarettes andcheck whether the
improvements made to~ the primary are efficient enough~i.o reach
the level of uniforr:i_ty requiredd for al gooc:' uuality prcduct.

RESEARCH AND DEVELOPMENT, NEUCHATEL - QUARTERLY REPORT
Applications
------------
70 1 of EEPC-3 were sprayed per 1000 kg, o'L total blend
to reduce the spotting risk.
in~ order
25 1 of EEAC-1 were sprayed per 1000'kg of total blend in order
to maintain the same aromatic taste.
Concluision
Industrial trials should be run,to check all parameters of
primary and secondary. Tastewise, the cigarettes are of good
quality.
