Grant Application No. 1010
Carl G. Becker, M.D., Cornell University
. I I already have made a site visit, and my letter is enclosed
in which I suggest to the Council that we either approve it as is
or wait for other preliminary experiments, in which it can be
shown that there exists a close relationship between hypersensitivity _
to tobacco in coronary artery disease.
' In their application they write a good deal about the immunological
aspects of tobacco and the agent which could cause allergic phenomenon.
However, as far as I can see they have yet not proven that there exists
ani interrelationship between tob acco allergy and coronary lesions.
This is paEt of their application as illustrated on page 7. On page
12 they write, in general, of how they want to go about it, as far
as general participation of the heart in tobacco allergy is concerned.
What I said in my letter still stands. I think a few
experiments would be very helpful prior to committing ourselves.
In general, however, this is good work. Relevance 1, scientific
merit 1; but I would like to see a few more data.
