R&W BItO W N& W ILLIAMSON TOEACCO CORPORATION RESEARCR& DEVELOPMENT MEETING REPORT SUBJECT. LOCATION: PRESENT' MEETING DATE: ISSUE DATE: CC: RIP Meeting I. W. Hughes Technical Center R. H. Honeycutt, G. W. Wallace, E. F. Litzinger,R. A. Gonterman, J. Wu, F. K. St. Charles Odober20,1994 Odober 21, 1994 T. F. Riehl; R.-R. Black/A. J. Golub, A. McMunrie, S. Wahal, S. W. Brooks, attendees The purpose of this meeting was to review the status of specific follow-up items, review brainstorm ideas, and to plan future work. Small Strip Studv The DC work request (JW/GWW) for the samples listed below has been issued. The 15C (15 % chalk, 0.50% sodium citrate, flax) and 25C (13% chalk, 0.50 % sodium dtrate, wood pulp) cigarette papers will be delivered to DC on Odober 21 (FKSC). GPC KS blend and design with: 1) 20% small strip (ss) +0% MET 2) 40%ss+0%MET 3) 20% ss + 10% MET 4) 20%ss+20%MET 5) 40%ss+10%MET 6) 40% ss + 20% MET These will be RIP4 tested (EFUFKSC). Low Chalk Paoer The DC work request (JWIGWVV) for GPC KS, GPC Lights, and KOOL KS with the 15C (15% chalk, 0.50 % sodium citrate, flax) and 25C (13 % chalk, 0.50% sodium citrate, wood pulp) cigarette papers has fssued. The papers will be delivered to DC on October 21 (FKSC/. 361100029

Filled Recon tud 30% of each filled recon was added to the blend (from Recon Group) and laredo made into a GPC spill (EFL). The sample cigarettes were selected by proscan for uniformity. All the samples failed RIP-6. The RIP-4 results are shown below: PJS Control 11, OSE, INI 20%Albacar chalk (2 microns) wICEL 41, OSE, ONI 20% Marblewhite chalk (12-15 microns) w/CEL 31, ISE, ONI 20% Calcium sulfate (gypsum) w/CEL 31, OSE, 1 NI 20%Aluminia hydroxide (AI(OH)3) wICEL 31. OSE, 1NI 35%MarblewhitechalkwloCEL 31,OSE, 1NI 30% Aluminum hydroxide w/o CEL 11, 2SE, 1NI The following samples have been Laredo made in a GPC spill (as samples above). The samples will be RIP-4 tested the week of OQober 24 (EFL/FKSC). 20% magnesium hydroxide wl CEL 35% magnesium hydroxide w/o CEL KOOL KS w/27 mm F'Iter In order to test the 27 mm concept, KOOL KS was refabricated with 27 mm filters using the current paper and 15 C(J W). The samples will be RIP-4 tested the week of October 24(EFUFKSC). CORE Samples The two CORE samples (302075 and 302081) primaries are complete with fabrications scheduled for OGober 24 week. Both of these samples have 7 C paper and 18% and 21 % SDS, respectively. These samples will be run on RIP-4 (EFL/FKSC). 12Cand7x15Ba d dP The last Dupont test (GPC menthol Lights KS) is being run the week of October 17. RIP Testing Two more technicians have been trained in RIP testing. The conditions in the RIP lab appear to be holding. One of the TAG samples will be run as a cross-check sample. We will also run 16 reps of GPC KS in order to determine how results in Macon compare to the results we got in Louisville (EFUFKSC). E t P gr_am We are going to request that Ecusta representatives come to R&D (tentatively the week of October 31) to discuss their RIP program and some of our brainstorm ideas (FKSC). 361100030

Kimerlv-Cl_a_rk ProacaM We are going to set up a meeting at Kimberly-Clark (tentatively the week of November 7) to discuss their RIP program and some of our brainstorm ideas (EFL). Non2r PI KOOL KS and GPC KS will be manufactured in DC with nonporus plugwrap (JW). These samples will be RIP4 tested (EFUFKSC), but will not be smokable. Glass F'berin Pag¢r Pam Williams is checking status (JW). Fiber Fraz'n Paoer Pam Williams is checking status (JW). tlinb Water Blend Addfves Condition (FKSC) KOOL KS and GPC KS at 75 % RH (-20% moisture), 69% RH (- 18% moisture), and 62.5% RH (-15.5% moisture) and run on RIP-0 (EFUFKSC). We will need to deviate from the NIST method by not conditioning the cigarettes before smoking. This will lest the hypothesis that higher moisture tobacco will pass the RIP-0 test. Perforated Banded Paner GPC KS and KOOL KS cigarettes with banded paper were "hand-pricked" with small holes in the band area. Smoke quality results indicated a slight reduction in the off- taste. This effect could be due to a lower tar, but the concept will be pursued with KC to determine feasibility (EFL). Brainstorm Ideas We reviewed the rest of the brainstorm ideas and assigned people to start working on these (see attached). The next meeting will be on October 27th at 1:30 in the Virginia Conference Room. R. A. Gonterman 361100031
