the UCLA School of Medicine frc~ f.our tobacco
Th~s ~rant brings the total eight-year commitment by the tobacco cc~panies to
Companies supporting the project are Brosm L Wlllimon Tobacco Corpo-
PtLllip Morris Ino0rporated, R.J. Reynolds Tobacco Co,any, and the United
States Tobacco Cceq~any.
~ovel concepts of treatment, including ~one ~rrow transplants f.or aplas~ic
anemia and leukemia patients are being studied. ~iev approaches to sictle cell
anemia and other ~netic and ~alignant diseases are bein~ exsmined. Basic research
in lun8 defense mechanisms and recombinant DNA are ~llo bein~ supported by the
'I'Ve @rant has been t~rmed "an i~portant development in biomedical research" by
Dr. Martin Cline, Bo~er PTof.essor of. Medical Oncolosy and director of. the project
at UCLA since the original Dive-year grant of $1,700,000 v~s made in 197~.
"Support 01" the kind provided by the tobacco companies is critical in the
erploratio~ of novel approaches to human disease," he I~id. "Our goal is the
pursuit of a~curate scientific information, and this generous contribution adis
lig~LtfiCantly tO the furtherance of that goal."
