American Cancer Soclet[: Dr. Vincent du Vigneaud, Cornell, Bio- chemistry, Nobel Prize winner; heads Department of Biochemistry at Cornell; used to work for Dr. 0.; quite sure he smokes; would require affirmative proof of causal connection before expressing opinion. Dr. M. H. Seevers, U. Mich., pharmaco- logy; would be an excellent choice; outstanding reputation and very down- co-earth; unless evidence is clear cue he would not go along. American Heart ~ssoc~.ation: Dr. Manfred Karnovsky, Boston, Bio- chemistry; promlnen= man; has served on President's Scientific Advisory Commission; not know his opinion on smoking. Dr. Arnold Welch, New Haven, pharma- .cologlst; teaches at Yale; inclined to be open minded; smokes. P.H.S Staff: Dr. ~ames Miller, Wisconsin, Biochem- istry; good man on carcinogenesis; Dr. O. knows him fairly well; thinks he might be likely to say that cant,ot exclude smoking as possible causative agent~ this is ~ust a guess based on fact that he works at McCardle Insti- tute. Dr. Sidney Welnhouse, Temple Biochem- istry; believed =o be head of Institute for Cancer research in Phila; good ....... biochem£st; pr~ably £nclined to feel there is an association; does research on carc£nogenesis.
