PROPOSED LETTER OF INVITATION
Dear Professor Smith:
I am pleased to announce that the PhiLip Morris
Research Center is sponsoring a scientific cDnference
on the topic, "Motivational Mechanisms of Cigarette
Smoking."
It is a truism that cigarette smoking is a
gratifying act, but the nature of the reward associated
with the act is by no means clear. The aim of the
conference is to stimulate fresh, multidisciplinary
thought on a question which over the years has generated
a lot of heat and data but not much light. The plan
is to bring together prominent minds from the life,
behavioral and social sciences with the following
objectives:
l) To propose and discuss hypotheses and
theoretical models pertinent to the
topic
2)
To test the fit of these conceptual-
izations to the empirical data in
the literature
To consider the results-of recent
unpublished studies
To give impetus and direction
follow up research.

We have gotten a strong endorsement of the topic
and agreement to participate in the conference from a
number of key researchers, including Paul Lazarsfeld
of Columbia University, Hans Selye from the University
of Montreal, Larry Stein from Wyeth Laboratories, and
Murray Jarvik from the Albert Einstein School of Medicine
"and Surgery. Convinced from this response that the
idea is sound, we have proceeded to draw up a list of
an additional twenty investigators whom we feel could
make a genuine contribution because of the relevance
of their expertise to the problem and/or because their
published work has revealed competent interest in the
subject.
This letter, thenj is an invitation to.you to
attend the conference. We have tentatively r~served
accommodations at La Belle Creole Hotel on Saint Martin
Island of the French Antilles for January 13 - 17, 1971.
Philip Morris will pay all of your expenses. Information
about the island and the hotel is enclosed.
Sponsorship by Philip Morris is neither pure
philanthropy nor crass commercialism. It rests upon
the conviction that the policy of the company will
benefit more from whatever may be the results of a
free, concerted, scholarly attack upon the question
than from allowing a continuation of the present state
of inadequate knowledge.
A tentative conference program and some of our
thoughts on the methodological aspects of the problem
are enclosed. More detailed information will be made
available as plans crystallize. In the meantime, I
will be happy to answer any of your questions by phone
(703-- 275-8361).
We are looking forward to a stimulating and
provocative conference. We hope you can join us.
Sincerely yours,
/jib
