Recounts conversation with Dave Vadehra of Video Storyboard [Tests, Inc.], regarding #3 ranking of Camel for 1993. States, "Jokingly, he [Vadhera] said he would not indicate that Joe appeals to kids." Notes author's reply: "I told him that we're always pleased with his survey because it confirms Joe's appeal with adults, which antismokers claim he doesn't have." Concludes, "he seemed pleased to know that we point to his work, so maybe he'll be supportive when he does his annual Wall Street interview." Handwritten note from one recipient urges, "strong push to talk about adult appeal and use of cartoons to reach adults."

Reviews Fontham et al paper that concludes "exposure to ETS during adult life increases risk of lung cancer in lifetime nonsmokers." Compares study with previous study by same author. Notes strengths and weaknesses of the study, the paper and the results. Addresses the study's efforts at controlling for confounders and bias. Addresses the study's data in relation to childhood ETS exposure and risk of lung cancer. Concludes, "this is clearly a very important study and the paper is quite a good one. I believe it will be widely cited by many people as providing the last word on the subject. While there are no major flaws in the study that one can pick on with certainty as being the explanation of the observed significant association with all forms of adult ETS exposure (spouse, workplace, social), it has certainly not demonstrated that these associations necessarily arise from an effect of ETS exposure." Concludes that the "overall evidence" on ETS "shows no association of lung cancer risk with workplace or childhood ETS exposure and a weak association of lung cancer risk with spousal ETS exposure."
