Abstract

Lists reasons for recommending that coumarin continue to be used "at levels less than 0.06% on Company products," despite OSHA listing of coumarin as a Class 1 chemical. Explains classification and that coumarin fits in as a substance shown to be carcinogenic in one mammalian species in which tests were replicated. Describes study of coumarin-fed rats producing liver tumors at higher levels and asks, "how does this daily dose administered to the rats compare with a smoker's exposure to coumarin in the smoke from a pack of cigarettes?" Opines that extrapolating rat data to human exposure results in "entirely unrealistic" dose levels in humans. Includes table comparing coumarin data across brands I=for 1977-1978. States, "only PM does not use this flavorant in its cigarettes."
