Abstract

Comments on Kauffmann study on effect of ETS on respiratory function of nonsmokers. Compares to findings of previous White-Froeb study, noting that neither claims an increased incidence of respiratory disease or symptoms. Reports that Kauffmann study demonstrated an effect of ETS on FEF25-75% parameter [see Comments] only on data standardized for educational levels of male subjects, implying that FEF25-75% values are influenced by socioeconomic factors. Criticizes Kauffmann study for failing to account for confounders (occupational and household pollution, presence of pulmonary disease, wife's educational level), and for technical flaws in data. Concludes that "because of the numerous shortcomings in this study, the conclusions of the authors are not warranted."
