Abstract

Summarizes the activities of the Scientific Research Group (SRG) of BATCo, and presents questions/answers generated from the review in the areas of: BATCo's research obligations, SRG membership and meetings, SRG accountability, research areas for consideration, budget, "peripheral" activities and the state of scientific knowledge in 1992. Responses to questions regarding BATCo research obligations are from legal council. Notes that "until 1991 the SRG was, through Dr. R.E. Thornton, accountable to the RPG. With the demise of the RPG in autumn 1991, there is, is fact, no formal accountability other than by virtue of Dr. Thornton's position in BatCo." Questions whether ETS is within the scope of the SRG. States, "It has been generally assumed that it is, although there is always the associated possibility that the results if research funded by the SRG will be used strategically in the public debate in this issue. (Of course, providing the science is sound, there would appear to be no objection to this)." Includes SRG flowchart and appends list of SRG grantees including area of research. Handwritten note at top indicates "Copy No 2 Mr G.A. Read; Legal 6/92."

Argued in a 1988 joint meeting of the worldwide tobacco companies that the industry should stop developing "marketable science" for use in public relations to fight the secondhand smoke issue and instead should establish a safe threshold for exposure to secondhand smoke. (Bates No. 2021548222/8235)
