ENVIRONMENTAL POLICY STATEMENT
FOR BAT INDUSTRIES AND ITS SUBSIDIARIES
BAT Ind~strles recognises environmental management as among the
highest corporate priorities and as a key determinant to
sustalnable development. Accordlngly the Group is committed to
"best Internatlonal practice" in environmental matters arising
in its businesses and activities, which comply with all laws and
regulations appllcable to its operations.
Each business should establlsh procedures for assessing the
environmental effect of its present and future activities and
should, beyond applicable laws and regulations, pursue positive
envlronmental policies, practices and standards aimed at
achieving "best Internatlonal practice" in its activities in
relation to the physlcal environment.
Particular issues which each business should address include:-
- The reduction of noise, odour and other factory
emissions;
- The reduction of hazardous waste generation and the safe
handling, transportation and disposal of such waste;
- The conservation of energy and natural resources through
the efficient use of materials, reafforestation,
recycling and other appropriate methods;
- The establishment and maintenance of contingency plans
for dealing with incidents and emergencies which could
adversely affect the environment or the safety and
health of the local community.
- The education, training and motivation of employees to
conduct their activities in an envlronmentally
responsible manner;
- The conduct of or support for research into the
environmental impacts of materials, processes, emissions
and wastes associated with the enterprise and on the
means of mlnimlslng any such adverse impacts;
- The encouragement of contractors and suppliers to
improve their envlronmental practices;
Each business should regularly review its pollcles, practices
and standards against best international policies and standards
to examine ways in.whlch improvement can be made.
A director must be nominated in each individual business who
will have specific responslbility for ensuring implementation of
and compllance with this Policy. A formal review of progress
will be made perlodlcally by the Board of BAT Industries.
