Abstract

Presents objectives, methods, and results of study to evaluate the effect of circumference and use of Mg(OH)2 paper on the mainstream and sidestream smoke deliveries of specific components "targeted by the Surgeon General as being important contributors to the irritation of environmental tobacco smoke (ETS)." Indicates analytical methods used for measuring these components, developed as a precursor to the actual measurement. Reports that the cigarettes with Mg(OH)2 paper showed an increase in: SS gaseous and total ammonia deliveries; NH3/NH4 distribution in MS smoke; benzene and toluene deliveries in MS; acrolein in SS; and reductions in toluene, formaldehyde in SS and acrolein in MS, compared to control models. States that acetaldehyde deliveries were the same for both models in the higher circumference cigarettes. Includes references, including some internal documents.
